It has been awhile since I have authored a column here. Fortunately, the news never gets less interesting, and unfortunately gets worse for women.

The top news story this week deals with hypocrisy and “cheap grace”.

First off, let me define the term cheap grace. In his book, “Conservatives Without Conscience,“ John Dean defines “cheap grace” as (and I am paraphrasing) simply seeking forgiveness from the people [God] you have hurt,  after knowingly committing a “sin.” He goes on to elaborate the fact that the acts are done purposely and the perpetrator knows all they have to do is seek forgiveness and all will be well again. They will be accepted by their community once more. It is the cure all from murder to molestation and everything in between. Followers of these teachings therefore cannot understand why there should be backlash at all! “Why should there be punishment when God has forgiven them?” They play victim and turn the blame on the brutal media or “judgmental liberals.” It’s sort of the Ponzi scheme of morality. It’s actually brilliant…if you are a part of this warped world of thinking. (If you would like to know more about this book, read it or go here: http://www.tomhull.com/.... ) Does anyone see the correlation between the stories coming out consisting of molestation and these kind of people? “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved…”?? (Mark 16:16).

Happy Spring Break for some of us. Others? Not so good and not so “spring” and definitely, no breaks whatsoever. The news gets more concerning as the fight in this War on Women continues. I am in constant amazement that these people, the people working to limit women’s choices have little else going on in their lives except to judge and demean women into submission, or at least try to. I yawn at their feeble, attached emotional attempts to somehow think they will try to “shame me” into silence, as that has never worked for me. Women who have lived under constant oppression are used to insults and the finger pointing, slut shaming tactics that accompanies conservative arguments against abortion, rape, equal pay, feminists…etc.

As a matter of fact, my rule is to erase all the emotion and defense mechanisms used by anti-feminists and just listen to their words.  All I hear is “yadda, yadda, yadda…aspirin between your knees…yadda, yadda, yadda…body prevents pregnancy in a legitimate rape…yadda, yadda, yadda…incest babies are blessings from God…yadda, yadda, yadda…there is no gender pay gap.” The words are enough. They say everything. For me, this plus my humanist, intellectual side is how I determine if something is defensible or indefensible.

How about passing “gentlemen” legislation or starting a group that begins with “men don’t have a right to…” and ends with “oppress women, or any other marginalized group under any circumstance”?

And on that note, here are the headlines for this week:

My first "controversial" post has been removed by Facebook. The Leonard Nimoy Project, where the intent of his photographs was to shed light on body image and that the nude, fat female form, whether White, Black, Latina, Asian, Am. Indian, Indian..etc, were beautiful, was removed citing "nudity is not allowed on Facebook."

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! I am sure you all are still dry-heaving from you post-Valentines, coital bliss (SARCASM), but it is my duty to report the reality and burst all your colorful bubbles…all “50 Shades” of them.

Happy New Year fellow Feminists! So much going on in our world and it is only week 2 into the new year!

First, before I get into the other headlines, I know that there are resolutions being fired off like bottle rockets, and I am sure that some of you out there have made the standard, “I want to lose weight” one most of us have made year after year.  No matter what happens I am here to tell you there are no failures, especially if all you are dealing with is weight (having to lose weight due to bad health is entirely another issue and will not speak on that topic simply because I am not able to give expert advice).  However, simply speaking about losing weight from a vanity standpoint, you did not fail if you did not lose those pounds last year. You are not weak if you did not avoid chocolate cake. You are not a loser, unattractive or automatically unfit just because you are considered “fat.”  As a WGSS major, part of my study was body image, and I can tell you, without a doubt, our influences on what is considered “healthy” and “attractive” come from unrealistic images we see every day. Images like waif models who have to starve themselves just to be that thin, or need to be photoshopped into unrealistic curves (or lack thereof).  Do not do this. Do not fall into this trap where your body becomes your enemy. Your body is beautiful and perfect. You have a right to be in this life and participate in it to the fullest, taking up as much room as you need to in order to enjoy it (I know I do)! So rock it, strut it, walk it, run it, climb it, attack it, ride it, slide it, spin it, shake it, swing it, move it , groove it and don’t worry about “losing it.”  Have fun, laugh out loud, fall down, epically fail…whatever! And when you have come to a stop, stand up, look in the mirror and take a bow, because guess what? You just lived life.  Here are some websites and FB pages to check out in order to reaffirm this message:

I tried to pick a topic to discuss going into this week. The headlines about (against) women these days range from the expected, such as state representative Rick Brattin, R-Missouri, who wants a law in his state to be created which only grants women abortion after asking permission from the father to the absurd (yet unsurprising) machinations of Ann Coulter’s comments about women and rape, to an actual grotesque result of a rape where a woman named Jessica Chambers was burned alive.  There are plenty of other headlines I could discuss in great detail. What about the Black woman on the subway who was verbally assaulted by a White man because he felt she was taking up “too much space” on the subway and demanded she “listen” to him by invoking his white, male, privilege voice, yelling,  “Listen when I talk to you!!!”? The list goes on and on and on. Through all this, however, one thought kept reverberating through my brain: women are treated this way because they either invisible to society or pushed back to be as “small” as possible by a community dominated by the idea that if a woman is visible, her presence should be equal to that of a ghost.

I come from the Texas border. Ironies and combinations are distinct and proudly thrust into your life (whether you want it or not). The Spanish is “pocho” (a tex-mex mix of English and Spanish), the food always includes hot chile and flour tortillas (flavors not commonly part of the diet of the interior of Mexico or the United States). Also, “time” along the border is a different rhythm of work and rest. The joke is when someone says to you I will do it “mañana,” it doesn’t mean “tomorrow,” it just means “not today” (and certainly not in the morning).  For the most part, the U.S. side of the border is moving right along with the rest of the country (as it should), but like the language, food, and definitions of time, the values of America are combined with Mexico along the border when it comes to the treatment of women. One in particular is the incessant control over women and our ideas, desires and contributions to society, and making men the most important centerpiece of whatever is going on, interrupting everything women do, bulldozing and upsetting our everyday lives. There is one very unique difference, however, on the border, these needs are micro, amounting to nothing more than series of unimportant tiny needs women are expected to fulfill.  These tiny “needs” are comingled in women’s everyday lives, leaving them fighting for their own development.

Some good news to report in Texas, the Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a very strict abortion bill from taking effect that would close ALL but eight abortion clinics in my state, leaving millions women, particularly in South Texas and along the border region, without convenient access to obtain an abortion. This comes after the the very conservative Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the law not burdensome to the women of the Texas border and South Texas. I have a not so new theory as to why.

I have heard of excuses as to “why” people fail at tasks, but never as much and for something as serious and worthy of looking into as domestic violence. I could go into statistic after statistic as to the numbers of women who are brutalized by their spouse/boyfriends/male relatives/male strangers and what the warning signs and symptoms are in general, but I would rather focus in on the “clues…”  clues, I might add, which were ignored by Goodell and the coaches, and not just on the day, or weeks following the incident, but MONTHS. These clues should have (and perhaps did but were pushed aside) given pause to the initial non-punishment of Ray Rice. Here’s my viewpoint of the MOST obvious clues (and I am sure I am not the only one who noticed):

Now I have heard it all! Apparently, women laughing out loud, according to Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Bülent Arinc, equates to a lack of “chastity,” and he wants us (women) to stop acting like laughing whores.  Ironically, this produced laughter around the world. Mom, Dad, without knowing it you raised the biggest freaking player starting at the age of two. I am sorry, Arinc that I am always happy and laughing and how terribly it reflects on my family raising a female child with a penchant for great freaking humor and rewards said humor with a boisterous, thunderous laugh. Well, I ‘m not sorry…actually, f*!k you!  I am your worst freaking nightmare! I did standup comedy for years, and did a show with an all-female lineup.  I had people rolling sometimes and I loved it!!  And when I laugh, I do it all the way, producing the most “balls to the wall,” tongue unfurled, teeth exposed like a lion roaring, food projectiled to the wall in front of me, pee in pants, shart on my panties, lung-cleaning sounds you have ever heard, and when witnessed will cause either others to laugh, or your eyes to bleed…that much freaking noise!!!  So F*!k YOU Arinc and the g***damn anti-human, oppressive, woman-hating, macabre gene pool you came from…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! #DirenKahkaha ("resist and laugh" campaign)

The City Council of League City, Texas just passed a resolution, 6-2, banning all requests by the federal government to house children, in her town, who are coming into the U.S. as refugees. Heidi Thiess, a councilwoman, proposed the legislation based on a vague “health and safety concerns” explanation. It is prudent to note that while Ms.Thiess is concerned about the dangers of refugee children in her city, she vehemently supports Second Amendment rights to bear arms, as she owns a small firearms shop in League City. Also, she is a Tea Party activist who believes in “conservative values” and served in the military, where she claims the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Chris Davis, a truck driver and self-appointed militia “patriot” and Cliven Bundy defender has put out a call to all people interested in “securing our borders” through private citizen militia groups in order to help combat the influx of “illegals” coming into the United States. The operation, called “Operation Secure Our Border” consists of taking his anti-government group, fully armed, in to Laredo, Texas and fight against this made up border tyranny in hopes of maintaining a “sovereign nation.” According to his Youtube video, Davis teaches his followers how to confront people who are, according to him, coming into this country illegally: “You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot.’ ” He is also claiming, as do many of his followers, being provoked by the influx of violent criminals crossing into the U.S. and the spreading disease!
