I just watched the 1984 version of “Red Dawn”, listed by National Review Online as one of top 15 conservative movies. The NRA pronounced as a great argument for unlimited gun ownership. You may remember that Cuban and Russian troops, after NATO collapses and the U.S. is alone in the world, invade us, and a group of patriotic teenagers, led by Patrick Swayze, take to the Colorado mountains to resist them. Lots of action ensues. The teenagers all die, but America wins. But here’s the kicker. One of the most contemptible characters in the movie is the town mayor who collaborates with the enemy and even turns in his own son. I’m thinking I’m seeing some parallels here. Shouldn’t this movie be reissued so that conservatives can be reminded what they once thought patriotism looks like?
