It covers approximately 22,500 square miles, about 13.7% of California's total land area (slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia), and is home to some of California's most productive agricultural areas.

Orange Nation needs its own Law Firm.  I'm not talking about Daily Kos HQ.  They have lawyers.  No problem.  Orange Nation needs its own Law Firm dedicated to slowing if not stopping Fracking initiatives from sea to shining sea; maybe another one dedicated to slowing if not shutting down the TPP.
Orange subscriptions - separate from those supporting Daily Kos - would do the trick to raise the coinage necessary.
$2.5 Million a year supports four attorneys, staff and coffee money.
Not a lot of cash, but it will pay for four lawyers at $250 Large per year, two (or maybe 3) Legal Eagles (Paralegals), and $100 - $150 Large for Office support, plane tickets.
Barely a Law Firm but one nonetheless.
The cost?
$25 per year per Kossack (assuming we can get 50,000 of us on a Million Member blog).
For $25 we can put four attorneys on the front lines of the war on Fracking.
That right there money well spent.

It was this Diary... Hilcorp Frack-Gas Stampede that inspired this one.
Sure, protests will help raise awareness - and protests are encouraged! - but companies like Hilcorp are bringing Fracking to your back yard - and have the backing of the courts to start drilling in your back yard before your first cup of coffee - before you even had a clue they were coming.
It takes more than protests to stop that horse$h!t.
It takes an Orange Law Firm.  Or two.
Got $25 to help end fracking?

While I'd seen AnotherMassachusettsLiberal on Daily Kos for a while in the years after I joined the Great Orange Satan, I truly met him online in 2009 when he offered to transfer his Netroots Nation registration over to me for the conference in Pittsburgh, PA that year. A number of Kossacks, at least 20, were working hard to get me to the conference and make it so we could afford for me to go, which took a lot of people contributing in one form or another. TheFatLadySings offered to share her hotel room with me and my dialysis equipment, for example, and exmearden covered most of my food for the time I was there. AML was one of those people; he gave me his registration as a gift.

Back then, he was working as a software engineer, a job that paid him well. Sometime after he transferred his registration for NN09 to me, he lost his job. Since then, he's been working as a solar power installer when he can get it.

It's winter. Almost spring, but where he lives, there have been some pretty bad winter storms. People don't get solar equipment installed in the wintertime, and he's been trying valiantly to make ends meet.

Now he needs help from us. This time, though, there's a twist; he has something for us, too.

Sometimes, we mere citizens feel useless, and more often than not powerless to have impact on those important things which affect our daily lives. One of the principal reasons for such (and other) feelings is the perception that we can actually DO nothing about them, one way or the other.

We even sometimes admit our ignorance about those things which could have dramatic and lasting impact on us personally, or as community, or even as nation. Many or most of those things which give us these feelings do so because we do at least get a glimmer of understanding that we could feel (either positively or negatively) the impact for a very long time. That can be intimidating, fear-causing--or just plain something (like a really bad tooth pain) we really wish to avoid.

I wonder what the citizens of Kiev are thinking along these lines tonight. Actually, I wonder what the people of Kansas City are thinking about such things as these tonight. Or, to be very specific (because I have friends there, and just because I absolutely LOVE their name), I wonder what my target focus group in Lost Nation, Iowa are thinking about such things at the moment. (Waves at LN,I! Long Live Rustic Days! I love and miss you all!)

There is just such one of those things upon our visible horizon today. At some point during this term (between this second and some point during June, 2014), The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will release its decision in a quite very important legal case, "McCutcheon v. FEC". Many American citizens are hoping vehemently that this case is affirmed. At least an equal number of citizens in our land are hoping against hope that the Justices will overturn this decision.

You can certainly do a search on the style caption of this important case and learn why so many think their view should be reflected in the decision of the Justices. A lot is at stake here. Some, myself included would tell you that democracy itself is at stake here. That's because it is. Surely at a minimum, by any fundamental basic definition of OUR democracy, democracy is at stake here. Affirming the case would change that definition. Overturning the lower court could preserve that definition. Those are the stakes.

How can you, or I possibly do anything about that? Well, follow me just below the squggledoodlethingey fold, and I'll tell you.

2014. Let's Go! II

by winkk

I wrote this diary a week or so ago only to find deaf ears.
So I run it again.
In part it reads...
There are a million people on this site.  Twenty Percent of us are hard core Dems and Libs.
That's 200,000 Dems.  That's enough to win every Senate seat up for grabs.  Or most of them.
That's one Dem for every Precinct from sea to shining sea.
So, where are ya?  What are your expectations for 2014?  Are you in?
If we keep waiting for "the Leadership" to get it done we'll be waiting a long time.
- end quote -

There are a few handfuls of Kossacks on this site all about the 2014 GOTV effort.
We need 200,000.
You in?
I'm "in" winkk, but just WTF are you talking about and how do I get started?

We're talking about expanding Dr. Howard Dean's "50 State Strategy" to the "200,000 Precinct Strategy."  That's all.  A Kossack in every tender loving precinct from sea to shining sea.  Or, two.  Three... the more the merrier.  But, we'll start with just one.  One is all we need to get started.  One times 200,000 precincts equals 200,000 Kossacks.  Simple math.

What's the point?  Well, the point is, should we get this done (and I see no reason why we shouldn't) is that those 200,000 give us a "base" of operations for GOTV efforts not only for 2104 but deep into the future.  The "point" is that with a base of 200,000 we have a better shot at winning more elections – from Dog Catcher to the White House – than without that base.  The "point" is an organized Dem party from sea to shining sea.
Here on the G.O.S. you can get started here
On the Googles you can get started here
Questions and more, you can ask on here or catch Bud and I "on air" tonight Mid.-2am ET where we yack about the Precincts effort every Wed. and Sun. night.
Wanna win?  Get in the game!

So, where are ya?  What are your expectations for 2014?  Are you in?  Or, are you just going
to watch from the sidelines?  As usual.  How can we turn 200,000 of us into ants marching?
Into one bad ass well oiled machine?
One way is state by state.  Get your state organized, then coordinate with adjacent states.
How do we do that?
We use the G.O.S. here to get that done.
If we keep waiting for "the Leadership" to get it done we'll be waiting a long time.
We are the leadership.  I know.  As the Grateful Dead said, "I can't believe it's up to us."
I can't believe it either.  But it is.  We're it.  Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell no!  So, we have an army of 200,000.  What are we going to do with it?

I live in NY state.  I know!  Hard to believe.  I know there are at least 500 people out of the 200,000 on this site that live in NY state.  At least.  The question is where are you, and are
you willing to organize NY state?  And, if not, why not?  Is there a reason not to?
I know everyone wishes to be cloaked in the bathrobe of anonymity on these blogs, and
that's fine.  Nobody looking to "out" anyone.  But, is there any reason that 200,000 of us
can't get better organized?  Becuz, if we actually get organized we not only win in 2014
but in every election deep into the foreseeable future.  2014 is here.  Let's go!

Reposted from "Progressive Politics:Tennessee Style" (PPTS) by Bud Fields Editor's Note: This is one important reason why the Progressive Voices Project is so vital, right now. Join us as we discuss "The Hunger Cliff", and what YOU can do about it, right where you live, today. -- Bud Fields

On our last PPTS episode, we began a conversation about what has become identified as "The Hunger Cliff". We worked to define terms and look at the people on a few sides of the issue.

Our upcoming episode is designed to look at those forces and people who are in favor of sending the least among us over that cliff, It's a really ugly question, but one that has to be asked if we are to create positive solutions that will fairly help those who are least among us.

A further question must also be asked, and (if we are able) answered if we are to understand more completely the problems being faced.

Follow me just below the squiggledoodlethingey fold, and I'll tell you who is going to help us look at this question on our next show.

I've decided to bring the show back to the airwaves, with some significant alterations. I believe this show is an important point of communication for Progressives across the country who listen, or call in, or chat in our chat room.

Originally designed to provide a voice for the activists, activism and activities of the progressive South (24,000,000 voters in 2012), the focus of the show has slowly evolved into a unifying national representation.

This is because many different geographic regions of the US have made PPTS their voice, as well. Having been off the air for three months, our archived replays during that same time have consistently averaged 5,000 per month (Blog Talk Radio Reporting, verified via iTunes.)

Evidently, the show has been providing progressives with action items, talking points, and truth. Many of those listens have gone out to those of other opinions as well. Loyal listeners have sent their opposite-thinking friends, colleagues, co-workers and family members links to give truthful information that negates the lies they have believed (listener testimonials). Feel free to listen to the last show, right here.

With the false information flying, the 2014 elections upon us, and the current situation with federal governance, PPTS has an opportunity to engage, empower, and send out progressive voices that will become the change they seek. Follow me just below the squiggledoodlethingey fold for the updates.

Senator Bernie Sanders has encapsulated in a single, biting paragraph why the current GOP-led government shutdown is occurring. It's a paragraph he uttered on MSNBC and then Tweeted out to the world.

It's a paragraph worth reading:

(58) Twitter - Search - #GOPshutdown 2013-10-08 14-37-54
This is about the wealthiest among us inflicting unspeakable pain upon American citizens and doing irreparable harm to the United States in order to protect their deep-pocketed interests.

It's about a child-like greed and self-serving insensitivity that the contemporary GOP has come to embrace with open arms.

It's billionaires going to war against Americans, and against America.

It's that simple.

This is a political blog, among other things. This is a political diary. It's kind of revealing on one hand, while on the other it represents a fresh breath of air for those of us who know the truth.

Seems as though there is a political election process going on in the Great State of New Jersey. The latest debate between the two major candidates found a female Democrat who did not show appropriate awe for the incumbent Republican Governor.

Seems like there is another Democrat from New Jersey willing to tell the truth as well. It's kind of refreshing, actually. But it was also a bit chilling for those of us who are trying to connect the dots to the reality of the current government shutdown, among other things. Follow me below the squiggledoodlethingey fold for the video. You won't need the transcript. I promise.

U.S. Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) (2nd L) speaks at a news conference about debt relief legislation with Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) (L), Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) (2nd R) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) (R) at the U.S.
Smartest six-pack in D.C.

The tea leaf readers say Responsible Republicans like Mitt Romney sidekick Paul Ryan are trying to walk their colleagues away from the brink:

Leading Republicans in the House appeared to be trying to move the stalemate away from efforts to defund President Obama’s health care law to a broader discussion of fiscal policy.

In an opinion piece in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal, Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin and chairman of the House Budget Committee, proposed negotiating a continuing resolution to reopen the government with a focus on changes to entitlement programs like Medicare and a reshaping of the federal tax code. He did not mention the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans had said must be defunded, delayed or damaged before the full government is to be reopened.

But after angry tea partiers voiced their displeasure in a flurry of tweets, Ryan decided that he meant something a little different:
“Are you putting Obamacare to the side?” Bennett asked Ryan on his show Wednesday morning.

“No,” the congressman replied. “Obamacare’s an entitlement just like any other entitlement. So that, as far as we’re concerned, is in this conversation. Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, those are the big drivers of our debt. If you look in the op-ed, I say we have to — ultimately we have to rethink all of our nation’s healthcare laws.”

So far from taking Obamacare off the table, Ryan says he was expanding the playing field to include Medicare and Medicaid as well. Sure, he acknowledged that Obamacare can't be fully repealed through through the shutdown threat, but:
“We’re not saying stop going after Obamacare,” he said. “We’re saying add these other things to this list because we think they’re in this country’s interest, and by the way, in some of these instances, entitlement reform, I think the president might be willing to do this.”
When he wrote the op-ed, Ryan might have been trying to limit the scope of the GOP's demands. But faced with little more than Twitter backlash and a question from Antonin Scalia's favorite news source, he's now written an even bigger check for the GOP leadership to cash.

2014 Now Open For Business!

by winkk

So, you wanna be a Community Organizer.  A GOTV kind of guy or gal.  You're in the right Diary! (as much as I suck at writing them)  2014 is now Open for Biz!  If you're a member of Drinking Liberally, the Coffee Party or another of a dozen such activist orgs, great!  Keep doing what you're doing!  All of those efforts make a difference!  We're just offering one more to add to your bag of tricks.  One that we think will not only make a difference but very likely be the difference maker in winning us some elections!

Now, some on here will know I've been all about this for at least 2, 3 years now, with efforts such as this one at Herding Cats.  What makes this new effort different?  This guy.
AnotherMassachusettsLiberal.  What makes him so special?  Well, I'm sure there are dozens of things, but the one pertaining to 2014, 2016, 2018 and well beyond is his software.  What makes this effort different than my other efforts is AML (AnotherMassLib) and his software.
They're both winners.

What AML needs is you.  Activists willing to kick the tires and run the software to fine tune this beast to get it up and running like a Swiss watch when 2014 really gets cooking very soon after the first of the year.  We're looking for 435 of us.  Or 438.  One for each Congressional district.
We need a bunch of you to Beta Test this beast!  Included in the duties is marching down to your City / Town /County Clerk's Office to request and receive Election materials from 2012.  So, yeah, there's some shoe leather and gasoline involved.  You know, activism as opposed to reading about it.  We'll show you how to gather that stuff.  After that, it's pretty much running the software and reporting back to AML what works and what sucks.  What needs to be changed.
Beta testing.

And, after that... well, after that we get down to the business of organizing your Congressional district right down to the street corner.  District / County / Town / Precinct / Neighborhood / Street Corner.
That's where AML's software comes in to help us do that.  It is the difference maker.
It is the magic we've needed to accomplish this party organizing thing.

So, the question to readers is who's in?
If you're in please join our G.O.S. Group on here at Organizing 538 for more info to get you started Beta testing.
I've got NY-21 covered, but if there are other NY-21ers out there reading this Kos Mail my butt and I'll show you how this works.
So, there are some 433 Districts to go.  AML has his District covered.
You in?  You should be.  This takes some work, but very well could be the magic we've needed
to send the TeaPublicon party packing.
