My Congressman Ted Lieu represents what up until the last election had been known as Henry Waxman's district. Ted has been an outspoken critic of NSA over-reach and just sent out the following statement regarding the Federal Court striking down NSA collection of phone records:
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles) - a member of the National Security Subcommittee of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee - issued the following statement in light of the news that a federal appeals court has ruled in a case brought by the ACLU that the NSA bulk collection of Americans’ phone records is illegal.
“Today’s ruling by a federal appeals court striking down the National Security Agency’s (NSA) collection of millions of phone records is a victory for the constitutional rights of every American. I commend the third branch of government for saying what most Americans already knew: the NSA has been acting illegally for years.
“This judicial ruling further underscores why the Patriot Act must expire and not be extended. Continuing to allow mass violations of our Constitutional rights is corrosive to our democracy and undermines trust in our Executive Branch.
“The NSA clearly violated the law by bulk collecting phone metadata and further investigation is urgently needed into other NSA programs – such as recent revelations about the NSA conducting mass search and seizure of internet traffic. Today’s ruling by a federal appeals court reaffirms our core democratic values: all Federal agencies must uphold the public trust, act according to the laws of the land and follow the Constitution.”
This past Friday Alan Grayson visited a gathering of his Southern California supporters at a private residence in Santa Monica. All day prior to evening event, emails trumpeting Robert Naiman's question - "Does Alan Grayson Want War With Iran?" had been flying around the internet. The lively discussion in the following video ensued - but the discussion continued with follow up emails - and yesterday morning Alan responded to continued calls for him to "stand behind the deal" and clarify his position - Dorothy Reik, President of Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains asked for a definitive statement - You can read Grayson's reply below the jump.
Ted Lieu is my newly elected Congressman - he represents the progressive Southern California district previously represented by Henry Waxman. He intended to vote for the Progressive Caucus Budget - he made a mistake and - on March 25, 2015 - immediately corrected the record...in the Congressional Record. Here - on a couple of Daily Kos diaries he is listed as having voted against the People's Budget - without any explanation. So I'm posting this diary to set the record straight.
Here's the text of Lieu's March 25th statement as it appears in the Congressional Record:
HON. TED LIEU of California in the House of Representatives
Wednesday, March 25, 2015
Mr. TED LIEU of California. Mr. Speaker, on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, my vote on the Ellison/Grijalva/Lee/Schakowsky/Conyers/McDermott
Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute, known as the CPC Budget (rollcall vote 136) was recorded as a ``No'' vote when I intended to cast a ``Yes'' vote. I wish to clarify my miscast vote and express my strong support for progressive budgets that invest in everyone, not just the 1%.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus' Fiscal Year 2016 Budget--entitled the ``People's Budget''--is a powerful, profound statement of American values and vision. The CPC fiscal plan recognizes that the middle class is the true engine of our nation's economy by giving working Americans a well-earned and long overdue raise with paid
overtime and guaranteed sick and parental leave.
The CPC Budget charts a bold course of economic growth for America.
It creates 8.4 million jobs, modernizes our nation's sagging infrastructure, makes crucial investments in education and enhances the social safety net. The Budget recognizes that comprehensive immigration reform is both a moral and an economic necessity. It is a road map to American success in the 21st century global economy.
The CPC Budget is aptly named; it is an economic plan that creates jobs, expands health security and guarantees a dignified retirement for everyone in America. I am proud to support the CPC ``People's Budget.''
If you need a fabulist claiming to be a former founder or co-founder of Greenpeace to bash solar power and wind power AND Greenpeace... or say that Monsanto’s toxic herbicide Roundup is safe to drink, or genetically modified "Golden Rice" is safe to eat, or nuclear power is safe. period...or climate change is a manufactured crisis; or releasing all of the carbon from the Canadian Tar Sands is not Game Over for our precious planet - Look no further than Dr. Patrick Moore. He’s not stupid. He’s not an idiot. He’s just an All Purpose Craven Corporate Shill (who wouldn't dare drink a glass of glyphosate - even after insisting that it's safe to drink a whole freaking quart of it.).
After watching the Canal+ Moore Implosion Video - I started reviewing videos & became increasing horrified by watching someone who actually seems to have earned the description of evil genius. So please watch my short video revealing dimensions of Moore with which you may be unfamiliar - And please follow me below the jump to meet the angelic fairy princess avatar (sock puppet?) that defends Moore in the comments section of my video - and whose voice sounds remarkably like Moore's.
Long time Daily Kos environmental champion RL Miller keeps getting better.
Yesterday evening, following an hour of holding No KXL signs and waving at motorists at a busy intersection in Southern California, RL laid out just how we will successfully stop TransCanada and it's Republican allies' plans for the Keystone XL Pipeline. According to Meteor Blades (thanks for the correction) the Northern leg of the pipeline as designed would extend 1,179 miles to Steele City, Nebraska, where it would tie into pipelines already built to take the filthy, extensively processed, Canadian bitmen tars sands oil to the Gulf Coast.
Here's a video I put together of the "Rally in the [San Fernando] Valley" to tell President Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline once and for all...co-hosted by Russell Greene and RL Miller.
Please leave a comment and tell us what you've done/been doing to stop KXL.
There's still time to recommend Beyonder 1's important diary about the July 16, 1979 Church Rock Tailings Spill - the largest release (by volume) of radioactive waste in U.S. history.
Ninety million gallons of liquid radioactive waste, and eleven hundred tons of solid mill wastes, burst through a broken dam wall at the Church Rock uranium mill facility, creating a flood of deadly effluents that permanently contaminated the Puerco River.
Michelle Bacuman just made a hillarious speech endorsing an alternate (Republican) bill. She said the choice between the two bill was akin to choosing liberty over tyranny. She provided some comic relief for proceedings that have been very frustrating to watch. The Republicans are predicably insane and the Dems fail to mention that the Markey/Waxman bill would provide financing for dozens of new commercial nuclear reactors - reactors that the private sector/Wall Street won't finance due to decades of mismanagement and cost over runs.
California’s Proposition 8 will be voted on November 4. If the proposition passes, its proponents hope that it will outlaw gay marriage in California. The proponents, mostly religious groups from around the country, have spent millions of dollars on false and misleading TeeVee ads supporting a "Yes" vote on Prop. 8. In one of the "Yes" ads, a law professor, Richard Peterson, claims that without passage of Prop. 8 elementary school teachers will be legally required to teach gay marriage in the schools.
That's right. The folks fighting to retain marriage equality are being out spent by folks who seem to have no problem with lying to & misleading voters to scare them into changing the California State Constitution. Yes on 8 (Yes on Hate) signs and bumperstickers can be seen all over the state. If you do nothing more, please recommend navajo's diary where you will find James Brosnahan's excellent letter to Richard Peterson.
Over an hour ago QuickSilver published an important diary about the "The Hate Talk Express". What's that? "The Hate Talk Express" is the pro prop 8 forces' statewide media bus tour scheduled to criss cross California beginning this coming Monday, October 20th in Sacramento California. The purpose of the tour is to influence Californians to vote for the odious Proposition 8. The diary has already fallen into DKos oblivion, but you can rescue it by recommending it.
The bus will visit Sacramento, Chico, Oakland, Modesto, Los Angeles, El Centro, Indio, and La Mesa, with another seven destinations yet to be announced.
Californians Against Fracking just issued the following press release on a letter signed by 100 California officials calling on Governor Jerry Brown to halt the environmentally-destructive practice ...
