****UPDATED: Now a Plank in the Platform **********
CNN is reporting that there is a draft for the Republican Platform at their convention that will introduce a "human life amendment". This is only a draft according to CNN, but it reveals the extent of the War upon Women. No exceptions for rape or incest. The unborn have all rights listed in the Fourteenth Amendment.
I am speechless. With this cellular personhood amendment, most hormonal (if not all) birth control will be outlawed as well.
Update 1: Thanks for the Rec List, my first.
Update 2: The Republicans have had this plank in their platform since at least2004.
Update 3: From the CNN article: Tony Perkins may have been involved this year as he was in 2008.
Debate over the abortion plank flared four years ago when John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee at the time, said he wanted to add language to the platform to recognize exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
That prompted angry finger-wagging from top social conservatives.
Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, chided McCain and said it would be "political suicide" for him to add language about exceptions for rape or incest in the abortion platform.
Update 4: In my opinion, just because this Human Life Amendment is, and seems to have been a regular plank does not mean that we should just ignore it this time around. Ryan and Akin have introduced bill after bill to get portions of this amendment through Congress. They are not going to leave this subject alone, and we could have a staunch supporter a heartbeat away from the Presidency. We need to hang this around the necks of not only Romney/Ryan, but around the necks of all Republican candidates, in the same manner as we need to hang the Ryan budget.
UPDATE 5 From Think Progress:
The Republican National Convention Platform has approved the “human life amendment,” which would ban abortion without exception for rape or incest.
So this is no longer just a draft item, the Romney folk have been in on it all week. No place for them to etch-a-sketch themselves away from it.
