HRC: 70 years after the death of FDR

by samsoneyes

Most likely by chance, Hillary Clinton chose the 70th anniversary of the death of the greatest liberal President, FDR, to announce her entry into the 2016 Presidential race.

FDR was, arguably, the most consequential man who ever lived. That's saying a lot, but look at his record: the New Deal, the welfare state, saving free market capitalism, massive public infrastructure projects, trade union laws, oh and don't forget, leading the Allied powers in crushing Fascism and saving democracy in Europe and beyond.

The piece below, written the day after President Obama's re-election, meditates on what liberalism means and on how two Democratic Presidents, FDR and JFK, practiced it.

We are all non-believers

The Curious Mental Glaucoma of Religious Adherents

This universal scepticism being an absolute truth about human beings, it is sublimely arrogant of any human – including atheists – to assert knowledge or authority of which faith (or non-faith) is the true faith. Hence my advice to friends and strangers alike, who have found or who are looking for God: let God do His job. You’re not God.

You're the author of your own life. And sometimes you get writer's block.

Lessons of an old play and a pretty new song.

The New Red Menace Redux

by samsoneyes

"The New Red Menace is a domestic movement within the U.S.A.   It is not an ethnic, religious or nationalist unit in the traditional sense (although it has powerful ethnic, religious and nationalist attributes).  The New Red Menace is the loose, invasive and potent ideology espoused by the modern Republican Party.  It operates to empower the powerful and to advantage the advantaged, by pouring into the American mainstream a phony, “family-based” ideology which, married to money and party militants, has been destroying not only good government but even good dialogue about government.  It is a scourge".

This diary has seen an influx of readers and so I am flagging it on my diary list from April 2014

So I asked a Republican...

by samsoneyes

What do you think of a faction that would tear down Homeland Security, to stop an immigration bill that barely begins to bring civility to the treatment of illegal immigrants?

And this is what he said, this is what Abe Lincoln said:

That's the GOP: it will "rule or ruin in all events."

They are, indeed, the new Red Menace https://davidkeithlaw.wordpress.com/...

A year ago the Islamic State (ISIS) seemed ludicrous. The President called them "the Junior Varsity team" of terror. Perhaps so, but through the skillful use of weaponry and propaganda, this apocalyptic death cult has placed itself center-stage for world attention. If our own homes are not at risk (yet), our Enlightenment values certainly are.

The Quiet One

by samsoneyes

Inspired by comments about another "favorite Beatle", George Harrison.

It takes wisdom to see what is beautiful in this material world, while trying to see the beauty beneath. It takes commitment not to be seduced by that beauty, not to be distracted by what appears to be real.

Artificial Hipsters

by samsoneyes

To act anew, we must think anew and to think anew, we must experience the new. So our minds must be open. Think young, sure, but don’t think you’re young when you’re not. Don’t kid yourself, you’re not a kid anymore. The time has come for some to hang it up.

The great era of American and British romantic comedies - running from the late 80s to the early 21st Century - mirrored the glossy, mortgaged, easy times before 9/11 and the financial meltdown. Maybe we just can't afford these trifles anymore?
