McCain is trying to make this election a referendum on Iraq, and the conventional wisdom inside the beltway is that he will win it if his attempt is successful. His position has been boosted by a Pew Research poll conducted last month which found that 46% of Americans thought McCain can handle Iraq better than Obama. A slightly lower number (43%) favored Obama. But McCain’s approach has significant problems.
Over at the Politico Avi Zenilman wrote about another possible option for seating the Michgan delegates. This basically involves turning the 40% uncommitted delegates into Obama/Edwards/Richardson/Biden/ delegates.
There is fallout from Barack Obama’s emphatic win in caucus states. Clinton supporters and some people who genuinely believe in the majoritarian premise of democracy are worried that the caucus system is inherently undemocratic. Some even call it disfranchising. Jerome Armstrong was right when he called the nomination "process-powered" in contrast to "people powered". I understand the arguments. Yet I believe that they miss a great point. The primary process isn’t merely about electing a nominee for the presidential election; it is also a process of determining governing theory, principles and procedures for the parties.
