Hampton Inn complicit in immigrant detention

I don’t often post anything, but I was appalled when I read that Hampton Inns were being used to stockpile immigrant children as young as 1 year old in Texas in violation of a court orders and physically preventing attorneys from seeing them or talking to them.

My husband and I don’t travel much but when we do we have always stayed at a Hampton Inn. I can say unequivocally that we will never stay at a Hampton Inn again. Not anywhere. Not ever.

I tried to call their corporate headquarters to let them know about my anger regarding their practices and spent 30 minutes in phone loops and on hold. So I will next start calling their local hotels. I have seen in the past that money talks and the withdrawal of money can really hurt. Please join me.

I got a robocall today and I fell for it. Someone says "We need to tell President Obama to pass the Keystone XL Pipeline. People are hurting and they need jobs. The pipeline will provide these jobs. Press "1" and tell the President to approve the pipeline." If I had hung up at this point I would not be kicking myself right now.

I pressed "1" thinking that I would actually be able to say "Don't listen to these people. The pipeline is a really bad idea and will only provide about 50 permanent jobs" But nothing except, "Thank you. Paid for the Petroleum Institute of America".

There was no option for a no vote. There was no opportunity to say what I really thought. All I can do is warn others not to press "1" and to tell President Obama that I am proof positive that the number of people who want him to approve the pipeline via this opinion poll is totally suspect. Disregard the numbers presented by the Petroleum Institute of America.

I feel slimed.

I have been lurking aroung DK for years. I finally bought a lifetime membership during the fundraiser in December. And now I have something to say.

Do the people who want to take away the right to choice on abortion even remember why women wanted that right? I do. There were often newspaper and magazine articles on women bleeding to death from self-abortions with knitting needles and coat hangers. Many women survived but were so damaged internally they could no longer bear children. There were also stories about illegal abortion mills with terrible sanitation causing infections and unlicensed quacks who could not do the procedure properly.

The women availing themselves of these methods were desperate. They were so desperate they would roll the dice on their own health or lives just to "not be pregnant". Every woman has their own reasons for getting an abortion but rest assured that the reasons are serious, valid and personal to her. It is not a decision made lightly.

I had an illegal abortion. There I said it. I was very lucky. I found a real doctor. It was done in a motel in a bad neighborhood. I traveled there by myself after work on a cold winter night, terrified and alone, to meet a man I didn't know and would never meet again. It took every cent I had so that when it was over I didn't even have money to get home again. The doctor called a cab for me and paid the driver himself.

I have never felt guilty because it was the right decision for me at that time. I vowed that my daughters would never have to go through a night like that. I have been a supporter of choice for over 40 years. Please let's not allow those dark days to return.
