Yesterday, February 19th, Michelle Obama said she was finally, for the first time in her adult life, proud to be an American. Not for the support of her husband as much as in the sense of Americans taking charge and demanding change in everyway. The response was loud, instant and blind rhetoric. She was instantly vilified, called out and in a sense that was, in every sense, completely misplaced.
Some background here, so you can understand the context of why I understand her statement so well. This is a sort of bio, but indulge me here for a moment; fore I can put her statement into better context than pretty much any pundit could try. If I am vilified for it, so be it. But it is true none the less; true no matter who tries to disprove it.
I was not proud to be an American until October 17th, 2005. I was born in autumn 1974, and it was over 31 years for me to finally see something that made me proud to be an American. But it was due to a unique experience that went to the root of emotions for many reasons, much the same that Mrs. Obama is experiencing.
