This story, in the Weekly Standard (boo, hiss!) is roundly reviled in another diary, but the author of the article makes some interesting points that are rarely discussed, despite their foundational aspects in any culture.
He assumes marriage is a burden taken on "heroically" by self-sacrificing men, in order to maintain "necessary" kinship systems without which society would collapse into rape and concubinage.
That's some interesting presuming going on there. In some quarters, in the last several decades, women have been seen in need of emancipation; men have then been described and unfairly? attacked as hormone-driven monsters; children have been limned as mere gullible pawns of custom and religion; and more to the point here in Daily Kos, it would seem, all these social structures have somehow combined to make citizens unable to think well enough, through all these cultural conditionings, to govern themselves toward a stable and satisfying culture.
