Meteor Blades has been doing a wonderful job writing on Libya, but I just found an intriguing article on the future of Libya from the RAND Corporation. Judge it on its merits. I won't discuss it, but will leave that to the author.

Somebody tells me I put up too many diaries. The only ones that got wrecked were the ones abusing the Republicans. I guess nobody is really interested in what the furrners are doing, so since it's a lot of work to read so many stories let alone put out a diary on them, I will stop putting diaries up. I thought if people weren't interested they didn't need to read them, but I guess it's hard work to read them too. Well, it's more work to write them.

Well, apparently it isn't the BBC. I tried to read something called Mid-Hudson News Network. I have been using this to keep up with local news since the Middletown, NY, Times-Herald Record (which was taken over by News Corpse sometime ago) went behind a pay wall and I decided it wasn't worth paying for. For several days, maybe a week, I have been getting e-mails with new headlines, but when I click to read the web page I get an old version from some time ago. Of course the web page does not have any contacts listed or even an unsubscribe link being the typical fuckup place they are, so I just delete their newsletter every day. Maybe someday I will try getting a phone number for them. For now I guess either it's just me or else nobody noticed they're gone. Anyway, today I noticed that everything they have is Flash media. So I tried clicking on a couple of their links and I got the same Install Flash Player message that I got from the BBC, and of course the same thing happens when I try to install it.

I always keep Radio 3 going whenever my computer is on, although sometimes I listen to something else. This morning it shut down unexpectedly. Usually I can start it up again, but this time I was unable to, and got a message telling me I had to install Flashplayer. Well, maybe they came up with a new one I thought, but when I tried to install it I first got a message telling me I needed to shut down Internet Explorer, which was conflicting. So I did, and it seemed to install but I got another error message. So I went to the Uninstall Software page and uninstalled it. Then I went back to the Radio 3 web page and clicked on the Listen Live page, and when the install message came up I reinstalled Flashplayer, but every time I tried to restart Radio 3 I got the same message. Apparently it does not know that Flashplayer is there. So the problem is that either there is some sort of technical fuckup at the BBC or else maybe they have shut down the iPlayer as part of their dismantling the British government. I tried to put in a complaint, but their complaint/comment page takes forever and you never know whether the complaint went through or not. So I went to the Radio 3 blog and wrote on it telling what happened and asked if someone might get back to me. I also put the Radio 3 blog on my Google Reader as a subscription to see if I get an answer. Then I thought, why not write something on DailyKos and see if anybody else knows something. Please note--I am listening to Radio 3 right now via a Windows Media file I found some time ago on vTuner, and this seems to work although I prefer to listen on the iPlayer. Actually I would like to put all the BBC live feeds onto my iTunes, but can't. So I suppose I shall have to either listen via the Windows feed or just listen to something else unless the tea-baggers manage to get public radio shut down and I won't be able to listen to anything which is probably what they really want. Or maybe try again every so often and hope whatever it is is fixed!

Please somebody get back to me somehow and let me know if you have any idea what is happening or are you as clueless as I am. E-mail address is cmorrison5 at hvc.rr.com. If you have any other way of listening let me know what it is. I don't think FM would work for Radio 3 in upstate New York.

From Radio France International:
India on Monday announced a 17-per-cent increase in social spending in the annual budget. The spending plans include widespread subsidies for farmers and the poor. The government has recently dropped in opinion polls after several corruption scandals.

A spokesman was quoted as saying that the government could no longer ignore the plight of poor people. But these left-wing bleedinghearts would say that, wouldn't they?

Amnesty put out the following press release, which I find disturbing to say the least:

Amnesty International has received reports that security forces in Yemen refused to allow residents to take the injured to hospital after Central Security forces fired on anti-government protesters and bystanders yesterday when at least 11 people were killed.

Security forces fired on protesters from armoured vehicles, as well as attacking houses where protesters were believed to have been seeking shelter. Two men were said to have been killed in their houses during a period of intensive gunfire, both of them shot in the head.

There is at least one, or usually two earthquakes each day in this place. Some people think it has something to do with gas extraction, but other people have been saying that this is something that began long before there was any such thing. Perhaps somebody might like to look into this and report.

The East African carries another story that is sure to increase the confidence of people in East Africa in the good sense and dependability of the USA. I suppose his idea is that all aid from America is welfare, and the USA can attach any conditions it wishes to, and Africans and others had better remember who is in charge! But then, we all know this man's track record don't we? Again quoted from allAfrica News:

Nairobi — Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will lose US aid under a proposal to punish countries that often take stands contrary to those of the US, in the United Nations General Assembly.

The Bill sponsored by Congressman Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, states that a country will be deemed ineligible for development assistance if it opposed the US position on more than half the votes during a General Assembly session.

Mr Gohmert has presented this proposal unsuccessfully in each of the past few years.

Nairobi — The energy crisis engulfing Tanzania deepened last week, as it emerged that East Africa's second biggest economy is operating on a depleted electricity reserve that could throw it into darkness in case of an outage.

In coming weeks, authorities plan to shut down major hydro plants, the main source of power due to falling water levels.

The country's power generation system encompasses the use of hydro, thermal and gas power.

The interconnected grid has an installed capacity of 773MW, of which 71 per cent is hydropower.

The largest hydropower complexes are the Mtera and Kidatu Dams situated on the Great Ruaha River.

Currently, the area (Ruaha and Ihefu) has been hit by a severe drought, which has greatly affected the generation of hydropower.

Manufacturers are already staring at major revenue losses that could in turn pile pressure on prices of key commodities."

ISI demands list of US agents.

Referring to the case of the American CIA agent arrested in Pakistan, I have heard people say in the last few days that there may be thousands of these people operating around Pakistan, and neither the American government nor the Pakistani government have any idea who they are or what they are doing. I quote an article in The Frontier Post in Pakistan discussing this. This article refers to "anti-American public opinion". This is the public opinion that is calling for the hanging of the American agent and doesn't really seem to care what he did or why. It is the public opinion that is also frequently heard calling for the hanging of Pakistani non-Muslims on doubtful charges of blasphemy for statements made against Islam or desecration of the Koran. The ISI has a really creepy record which goes back a very long time. Nonetheless, nobody likes to have unaccountable foreigners running around their country killing people. Here is the story:

"ISI demands CIA to provide contractors’ list

NEW YORK (Agencies): The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has demanded that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) share a list of all its contractors working in Pakistan, the New York Times reported. Speaking in light of the Raymond Davis case, an official of the ISI told the New York Times the agency believed there were more contractors like Davis working behind the agency's back. The unnamed official said that Pakistan was ready to put the Raymond Davis episode in the past and that both agencies needed to continue working together. "Treat us as allies, not as satellites," said the official of the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI. "Respect, equality and trust are needed." The ISI wants a list of the contractors working for the CIA in roles that have not been defined to Pakistan. The official also said that many officers in the ISI were not willing to have Davis released.. The behaviour of people like Mr. Davis is deeply embarrassing to the ISI because it makes the agency "look like fools" in the eyes of the anti-American Pakistani public, the ISI official said. Cooperation between the American and Pakistani spy agencies has been scaled back because of the case. A senior Pakistani intelligence official in Islamabad said the case of Raymond Davis had strained but not broken relations between the CIA and the ISI because the ISI didn't know about Davis before he shot and killed two Pakistanis on Jan 27 in Lahore."

"GROUPS OF revolutionaries are moving towards western Libya in an attempt to link up with opposition militias near Tripoli, setting the stage for a final assault on the capital – perhaps within weeks.

The groups are heavily armed with military weapons, which have been looted from every army base and police headquarters east of the central oil town of Ras Lusafa. They have fought skirmishes with pro-regime forces near the Gadafy family stronghold of Sirte, but have avoided intensive clashes."
