OK, so there's some conversation that Steve Jobs and Republicans both operate on emotions. There may be some truth to that theory, but it's really only the tip of the proverbial iPod.
Here are the three things that Steve Jobs and Republicans both know:
- Americans love to claim an identity. Who am I? I'm a Mac-Head. I'm a Republican voter. I'm a bleeding edge iPhone user. I'm a tax-cutter. I'm an iPod addict. I'm a Randian. Apple advertising works in exactly the same way that Republican talk radio works. Join our exclusive "club", even though it goes against your best interest.
This advertising approach only works because...
- Americans are suckers. With all due respect to Steve Jobs, most recent Apple devices are ticking time bombs of consumerism, guaranteed to keep you coming back for the next generation. The iPhone 4 has an irreplaceable battery. When it dies, your "investment" is done, and you have to buy the next generation. This is commonly known as a scam. Apple is up front about this, and calls it a "feature". Just like electing a Tea Party representative to "cut taxes" and "limit government", you get what was advertised and there's no replacing it when it does what it said it would do.
Republicans and Apple thrive in large portions of America because they push an identity, and gullible suckers prefer being part of a club, even to their own economic and personal downfall.
