Barr drains away 5 points from McCain in NC, bringing McCain's lead down to 45-41 over Obama.

This is now a state that McCain really has to worry about.

What do the relative ground operations for the candidates look like there? I have to imagine Obama's is better than McCain's.

Exactly how much time does he need to "review the bill"?

Could he take a few minutes off from looking for the Rainbow Connection to show some leadership on this bill?

Where is his statement calling on all Congressional Democrats to reject this bill?

Last night it was reasonable for there to have been no statement. This morning it is not reasonable.

Waiting until after a vote on this in the House to "lament the passing" of this bill is not acceptable. He needs to make a statement before it comes up for a vote.

Absurd McCain statement of the day

Here is McCain's statement today about the SCOTUS habeus corpus ruling:

We are now going to have the courts flooded with so-called, quote, Habeas Corpus suits against the government, whether it be about the diet, whether it be about the reading material.

Can someone please explain to Senator McCain that you don't use a writ of habeas corpus to complain about the food in prison, or to ask for magazines?

Can someone please explain to me how you get to be a Senator of the United States when you don't know what habeas corpus is? Do we need to quiz McCain on basic citizenship issues? Ask him how many stripes the flag has, or how long the President's term is, things like that?

We have a sitting Senator and Presidential candidate who doesn't know what habeas corpus is, and who is making foolish statements about what he thinks it is, and nobody is batting an eye.

The National Association for Business Economics sounded a warning on a topic near and dear to its heart this morning: economic indicators...

...Ms. Haver catalogs the casualties of budgetary tightening, writing that "the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has been forced to terminate all hours and earnings data reported for local areas as well as payroll employment for 65 small metro areas..."

Gee, I wonder why all of a sudden there's no money for detailed reporting of the statistics on local hours and earnings data.

And gee, why would small metro areas naturally jump out at budget cutters as places from which we don't need any payroll employment data?

There has to be a Reckoning.

There is an apparent unwritten tradition in American politics that when a new administration takes over, it turns the page on the misdeeds of the previous administration and lets bygones by bygones.

My biggest concern in 2008 is making sure that this does not happen again.

I understand all the arguments in favor of the "sweep it under the rug" approach. Keeping the stakes of each election relatively low - and making sure that everyone on the losing side doesn't think that they're on their way to jail if they honor the results - smoothes over the transfer of power and stabilizes the system. But I think that over time a "moral hazard" has been built up which we can no longer ignore. More after the fold.
