Lies tick me off. And a lie doesn't get any bigger than the Ryan/GOP one purporting they will "save" Medicare. But what do you say of dissembling, deceiving and lying media fronts?

Tuesday night ABC's Jonathan Karl pretended to fact check the Obama-Biden claim that Paul Ryan's Voucher Plan would "end Medicare as we know it." The Obama-Biden claim is completely true.

So when he endorsed the GOP deception, Jonathan Karl's pants were on fire. The GOP, Ryan and Karl pretend those 55 and over can keep traditional Medicare. It is a malicious lie intended to divide the old from the young while gutting the entire program. They know that. This is the truth about privatizing Medicare.

1. Any insurance plan relies on younger, healthier subscribers' inputs (premiums) to pay for the less healthy older subscribers. The younger usually need less care.

2. By giving the younger seniors a voucher, the GOP effectively siphon off funding in the form of vouchers for younger seniors, de-facto defund traditional Medicare and cause the system to collapse financially. So, no, older seniors cannot "keep it." It won't be there.

Whose side are the nation's leaders on? That is a rhetorical question. Every day it's more clear that no one is on our (the American peoples') side. And although the President could use his Constitutional powers to end this circus around the possible default and its related impact on the US and world economy, apparently, he won't. The GOP won't compromise, so the “only possibility” is to allow one branch of Congress to hijack a duly elected government with a duly elected Democratic led Senate and a duly elected White House? Essentially, one-sixth of this government is dictating to the rest of America? This is extortion and in any other context would be illegal. I cannot believe it is legitimate in this instance. The House Majority Leader and Speaker hold a figurative gun to our heads, saying essentially that they and their cohorts will destroy us if we don't do it their way. The United States supposedly does not negotiate with terrorists. So, it should not with economic terrorists within our own government, who would do what OBL could not do, shut down this government and destroy the entire economy. They have admitted publicly that that is their goal, that they must do whatever it takes to assure that Obama does not get a second term. This is is a low point for our entire country, that the very people who ran up the debt by giving away the store via tax cuts for the rich and large corporations (we could not afford) and ginning up wars (which should never have been fought) try to stiff the American people this way.

Today is national blog4reform day, a day for real reform, that is. Today is personal. Lowell has written with passion about Brian Moran's "day job." I write with equal passion. With our anger over Wall Street's undoing of the US economy; two unending needless wars; and the assault on the New Deal, it is sometimes hard to find a place for the outrage we would appropriately feel. So, privatization and profiteering from education is one of those issues which flies under the radar for many. However, education is not only a right. It is a public trust. Let us not mince words. To sell off our educational resources (including federal taxpayer dollars) to privateers is betrayal of America's citizens. But there is nothing sacred anymore.

(I am (finally) fired up and ready to go. Consider this the first installment on this subject of how out of touch today’s GOP is, especially in Virginia. It will take four posts to address the various issues in the references I will cite. My next installment will address the assertions about the business community and their reactions to Creigh’s message. The third article will address Dems and the rural vote. The fourth will show why Bob McDonnell is not qualified and does not deserve the support of even the GOP base. Here goes the first. Fired up. Ready to go.)

If you want to understand how out of touch today’s Republican Party is, how chauvinistically it holds its rural vote, and how undeserving of it the GOp really is, you have only to look at some recent incidents. First, a major Republican, Tom Davis, suggested that a rural Virginian, with a stellar record, a law degree from a much more respected university than his opponent (Wake Forest v. Regent, come on!), and a much stronger legislative record of accomplishment, isn't qualified to be governor.

Two years ago, when my grandsons were 7 and almost 9, I provided day care for a few weeks. One day I took them to a kids’ movie. We got going a bit late and the older one was worried we wouldn’t get there in time. "Don’t worry," I said, "they play lots of previews." "I’ll drive safely and we’ll still get there on time." The almost nine-year-old was still worried. But he knew a short cut. For only a second, I hesitated. And then, I thought, of course, he watches every street we drive and knows even subtle changes in routing. Sometimes he even warns "you’re going the wrong way" when Mom tries a new route to avoid traffic. Backseat driving began at age 4! In short, he pays attention way beyond his years.

The editorial yesterday in the Richmond Times Dispatch is the perfect example of what Farhad Manjoo talked about in his book, True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society (2008). Manjoo illustrates the extent to which arguments devoid of any fact whatsoever have intruded on and taken over what is purported to be "discourse." This is the language of the new tribalism, the symptom of disintegrating society, and the morsels of decaying community. It’s survival of the fittest, zero sum game, "winner" takes all (winner, according to some, not necessarily to be determined by fair elections).
