Ugandan clergy use children as hate grenades

In a stomach-churning article, Ugandan "pastors" proudly describe their deployment of children in their genocidal war against gays.

Thousands of children in Uganda Friday demonstrated against homosexuality on the streets of the country’s capital Kampala. The children carried placards supporting the anti-gay bill which was recently tabled in Parliament by Member of Parliament David Bahati. Other placards carried messages attacking the countries trying to intimidate Uganda to drop the bill.

I just got a tip about the blog GayUganda. GayUganda's January 13th post is particularly interesting to me in light of my dairy earlier today about Senator Wyden and his economic warnings to Uganda should the Anti-Homosexuality Bill pass. GayUganda provided a link to an NTV Uganda news report showing parts of President Museveni's speech on Tuesday before parliamentarians. Museveni has apparently received calls or visits from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper. I've transcribed that section of the video, which starts about 33 seconds in.

Concerned by what he calls the "barbarity" of Uganda's proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill ("kill the gays bill"), U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) sent a strong letter on Tuesday to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk. Wyden is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee’s subcommittee on International Trade, Customs and Global Competitiveness.

Update: Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle confirmed to speak at rally.

So much has happened in the scant two weeks since my initial post about the upcoming "Respect Humanity: Uganda March and Rally" that I thought an update post was needed.

As you will recall, students from Beaverton, Oregon's Southridge High School Leadership Club, GSA and Uganda Club were so upset about Uganda's pending "kill the gays bill" that they joined forces to organize a march and rally to focus public attention on the issue. Preparations for the January 23rd event are ongoing, and there are numerous exciting developments to report.

Uganda's proposed gay genocide law isn't just an abstract concern for students at Beaverton, Oregon's Southridge High School. Southridge has a sister school in Kalisizo, Uganda, and students and faculty from both have an ongoing and active relationship.

Southridge also has an active Gay-Straight Alliance club (GSA), and the entire school experienced the sting of anti-gay bigotry when in 2005 principal Amy Gordon (now on leave) canceled The Laramie Project, a play exploring the hate crime murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard.

According to Esther Griffin, a parent volunteer for the Southridge GSA, the interests and concerns of several student groups have now aligned.
