We all know what doesn't work in education 'reform': standardized testing, vouchers, merit pay, larger class sizes, over-reliance on charter schools, corporate takeovers, witch hunts to weed out 'bad teachers'. The list goes on.
But what works?
As a teacher running for state assembly in New Jersey, I want to provide viable solutions to the 'reform' movement's privatization and corporatization of public education (now there's a mouthful!). So, tell me how you think public education can be better; share your success stories; give me real, viable answers. Pretend that everything in the first paragraph doesn't exist. What would you like to see in your classroom/school/district? Is there something you want more of? Less of? More time to do? Better ways to do it? Describe your education utopia in a real-world context.
Please keep your remarks professional and realistic. It's easy to trash-talk, but that only alienates, and there's far too much of that going on at all levels of government these days. I want to hear your expert opinion because you are the expert! There are so many so-called 'experts' on the talk show circuit who've never taught a day in their life, so I want to give you all a chance to be heard.
