Netroots Nation Sunday Service: Contributors Wanted

Loggersbrat and I will be leading the Sunday Service at Netroots this year. If you are planning on attending the conference, please come join us at 9 AM. We will end well before the community service project, so there is no conflict. All are welcome to attend: those from all faiths, those with no faith, and anyone in between. I am Jewish, loggersbrat is Episcopalian. Last year the two of us led the impromptu service with linkage, who is a non-theist.

Brigham Young University basketball starting player Brandon Davies committed a terrible offense: pre-marital sex with his girlfriend. BYU's honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to "live a chaste and virtuous life." This move by the university this highlights the negative attitude towards sexuality harbored by many conservative religious traditions, especially Mormonism. At a university so conservative on their views about sex, I am concerned about the student’s sexual health and safety. Surely at a University that does not “allow” pre-marital sex, students still are in need of sexual health services. Doesn't a university that prides itself on being a moral institution have a moral obligation to the health and well being of its students?

Worship any God you want, but if you buy into any belief system that says some people are more equal than others, you're a fool. Further, if you think your savior's prejudice should shape public policy, you're a tyrannical fool.

Former Arizona Governor Evan Mecham was all of that, but the Mormon car dealer was also a bumbling nincompoop whose fundy ego drove him straight into an impeachment cul-de-sac. Unfortunately, the state's new crop of authoritarian crazy is organized and downright vicious. In the past couple weeks, a long list of anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-education, and anti-healthcare bills have sailed through some important committees. If they land on Governor Brewer's desk, it's unlikely she'll wake up from her 13-second stupor long enough to veto them.

To a large extent these laws are grounded in the intolerant beliefs of the legislature's Mormon leadership, abetted by other religious zealots.

Utah Non-Discrimination Ordinances Denied Even A Committee Hearing

Senate Bill 148, which would provide housing and workplace protections against discrimination for sexual orientation or gender identity has been denied a committee hearing. The bill sits in the Rules Committee, and chairwoman Sen Margaret Dayton (R) says it's unnecessary to hear the bill.
Senator Ben McAdams introduced the legislation several weeks ago, but since then Republicans and Conservatives have lined up against it, despite the clear desire of both their constituents and their religion.

Two different state-wide surveys have shown that 70% of the residents in Utah are in favor of allowing people to work in their jobs and live in their homes without fear of being fired or evicted for reasons that have no bearing on job or rent performance. Even the Mormon Church has come forward and said that these protections are fair and should be passed state-wide.

And yet Republicans in Utah still refuse to even listen to the bill, much less vote for it ... Equality Utah points out that there are still 13 days left in the session for something to happen. But at this point there is not much hope of the bill advancing.

Let's show Eric some love. He's earned it.

If only it were that easy to help Ben McAdams with the hard work he's doing.
