Having been inspired by a fellow Kos’er, I used it as a template and wrote the following letter to Senators Cruz and Cornyn of my home state, Texas. If you like it, feel free to use it as a template, but be sure to modify it to fit with the Republicans representing your state.
In the immortal words of Edumd Burke, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
I know you are no supporter of Donald Trump. But as a member of Congress your first duty is to the country, not your party, and not even to the constituents that elected you. But it is not enough to “not support or endorse” someone like Mr Trump. Ignoring him and his behavior is like standing idly by while a bully pummels someone you know and love. Surely you are more principled than that.
Although it has been clear for several months that Donald Trump is not fit to be President, it has become crystal clear over this past week. He is an individual that cannot take any criticism or even understand how to respond to it. He has no idea at all of how to govern. Instead he takes personal shots at a military family who lost their son defending this country and questions their patriotism.
While some members of Congress have made strong statements renouncing Donald Trump, I have not seen anything from you or your office. It is time to finally take a stand against bigotry, strong man tactics, xenophobia, sexism, and more. I could go on, but I know that you know he is not a good person. Donald Trump's praise of Putin is beyond comprehension for someone running for President of this great country. Have you ever seen a candidate running for office, let alone President, that praises an autocratic leader for their leadership style? I doubt you can, or if it has occurred, I would assume we would be ashamed of it as a country.
This country has faced a man like Donald Trump before. Senator McCarthy besmirched the reputations of hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals and it took the courage of a few individuals to finally stand up to him to stop the insanity. You are elected from a “red” state so your silence speaks volumes that you value party over Country. You know what you are seeing and hearing is not right, and if Donald Trump had any other party affiliation you would be out there condemning his actions without any reservations or qualifications. Your passive stand paints a clear picture of you as a Republican first and an American second. Show me the courage of your convictions and speak out against this dangerous person, putting AMERICA first.
