Short non-diary, but… this is almost too funny to be true. In an interview in 1989, Donald Trump said he wished he could be a black man, because “a well-educated black” has so many advantages over white folks.

The drug bust that earned Darren Wilson his special commendation may go up in smoke because Wilson won't testify. Wilson failed to show up for the preliminary hearing today. Now the case is going to be presented to the grand jury — ~~the same grand jury that's handling the Michael Brown case~~ — and Wilson's attorney says Wilson has no plans to appear for the drug case, so it will likely be tossed.

Perhaps Wilson doesn't want the grand jury to ask about the suspect's version of events, which is that Wilson “beat my ass in my front yard while I was handcuffed then gave me 6 felonies.”

I was reading this article in the New York Times today —

— and I started thinking about how much greed is too much.

At some point, greed becomes not just an obstacle to containing medical costs, it becomes a threat to the entire social order.

Things like this make me thing we might have reached, or passed, that point:

Patricia Kaufman’s bills after a recent back operation at a Long Island hospital were rife with such charges, said her husband, Alan, who spent days sorting them out. Two plastic surgeons billed more than $250,000 to sew up the incision, a task done by a resident during previous operations for Ms. Kaufman’s chronic neurological condition.

I’m a middle-aged white guy. I was born lucky (i.e., white male American, with loving, affluent, involved parents) and just kept getting luckier, so I have had very little interaction with the police in my life.

But let me tell you a little story. It will seem incredibly trivial — perhaps even offensively so — compared to the brutality and murder meted out by cops against black folks (and other folks too), but there is a point to it.

I didn't realize this process would be so drawn out. The prosecutors plan to take until at least mid-October to present their case, then the grand jury will begin deliberations.

It will be interesting to see how long the demonstrations in Ferguson continue. I suspect they will stop soon. Then there will be at least a 2-month wait to see if there will be an indictment.

I feel for Michael Brown's parents, having to live in limbo for so long.
