I'd like to thank Readers & Book Lovers for beginning an Audiobooks Club. Audiobooks are also referred to as podiobooks, podcasts, podnovels, etc., and cover the same genres as paperbound books. The main difference is you hear them, rather than read them ;)
Many of us listen to audiobooks as we commute, do household chores or exercise, or just to relax at the end of the day as an alternative to TV. Some audiobooks are lavish productions with professional narrators, quite close to listening to a play, and others are simply the author quietly reading their work, much like a poet reciting one of their poems.
Both types can be an enjoyable experience that exposes our minds to wonderful stories. Choose your audiobooks like you would a paperbound. Go for a subject or title that sounds intriguing, listen to a sample, and if you like what you hear, give it a try.
Note: These selections will be young adult friendly. There may be mild violence, language, and sexuality. Most audiobooks notify the listener of such before the book begins.
The Mechanics
To listen to an audiobook, you need a device that can play the book's file. This can be your computer such as laptop, or a smartphone like the iPhone, or a music player such as the iPod or other mp3 player, or a CD player for books that come with their files already on CDs.
You either stream the file, which means your device plays the file without first storing the file inside of the device, or you download the file into your device and then play it such as you would music. Of course, for files already on CDs, you just pop them into your CD player and you're good to go. Don't forget, many computers can write files to a CD, that you can then play in your CD player (iTunes does this fairly easily).
