My problems with age adjusted death rates are Minorities tend to live more in Urban areas that were hit harder first by Covid before we had vaccines.
Why don’t we have Rural vs Urban adjusted Covid death numbers?
Granted the more Rural American Indian population got infected first also at such high rates than everybody else runs counter to the Urban areas got hit first trend. Why? How? very good questions I have no idea please tell me your thoughts.
Poorer Americans were much more likely to work during Covid before we had vaccines so we were much more likely to be infected. Also Poorer Americans tend to have less insurance, illegal immigrants tend to have no insurance so the Hispanic death rate should have been much higher ( I suspect an under count for Illegal Immigrants). Why don’t we have had to work during Covid death numbers?
Vaccination rates are counted but are Covid deaths adjusted for vaccination rates?
Adjusting Covid deaths for age alone ignores these other I feel valid factors.
looking at age-adjusted mortality rates, disparities persist among racial and ethnic groups — but they have narrowed so far in 2022 compared to the first two years of the pandemic. Indigenous Americans had the highest COVID-19 mortality rates for 2020, and they also have the highest so far in 2022. Pacific Islander Americans had the highest rate in 2021. Latino Americans had the second-highest mortality rate in 2020, and Black Americans, along with Pacific Islander Americans, currently have the second-highest rate so far in 2022. In all three years, Asian Americans have had the lowest COVID mortality rate and white Americans the second-lowest. www.apmresearchlab.org/...
KEY FINDINGS (from data through September 3, 2022):
Note: these numbers are sourced from this CDC dataset, the total count of which sometimes differs slightly from the total count reported on the CDC’s primary mortality landing page. Also, time series data used in this report’s figures lags behind these cumulative numbers due to incompleteness of recent data.
-
Of the approximately 1,044,391 cumulative official COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., these are the numbers of lives lost by group: Asian (32,721), Black (147,540), Indigenous (11,427), Latino (164,604), Pacific Islander (2,205) and white Americans (678,998). Additionally, 6,896 deaths are recorded as “other” race.
-
These are the documented, nationwide (U.S. states + D.C.) crude mortality impacts from COVID-19 data for all race groups since the start of the pandemic.
-
1 in 213 Indigenous Americans have died (or 470 deaths per 100,000)
-
1 in 278 Pacific Islander Americans have died (or 359 deaths per 100,000)
-
1 in 281 Black Americans have died (or 356 deaths per 100,000)
-
1 in 290 white Americans have died (or 345 deaths per 100,000)
-
1 in 372 Latino Americans have died (or 268 deaths per 100,000)
-
1 in 592 Asian Americans have died (or 169 deaths per 100,000)
-
Indigenous Americans have the highest crude COVID-19 mortality rates nationwide — about 2.8 times as high as the rate for Asian Americans, who have the lowest crude rates. And, the CDC notes that Indigenous American deaths are often undercounted, with the latest research suggesting the true mortality rate for this group could be around 34% higher than official reports.
-
Indigenous, Latino, Pacific Islander and Black Americans all have significantly higher COVID-19 mortality rates than either white or Asian Americans once the data are adjusted to account for age distribution differences among racial and ethnic groups. Nationally, every group except for white Americans has a higher mortality rate after accounting for age, and Latino Americans see the greatest increase between crude and age-adjusted rates. Age adjusting allows for more apples-to-apples comparison among racial and ethnic groups. www.apmresearchlab.org/...
Notice with age adjusted numbers in the first block quote the White Covid death rate is second lowest. In the next block quote the per capita Covid death numbers Whites are third lowest behind Hispanics and 9 deaths per 100,000 away from tying African Americans for fourth place.
This reminds me of all the news articles I read growing up and still today about Hispanic Americans dying more of diabetes and obesity when we live longer than Whites en.wikipedia.org/…. Articles like those give the impression Whites live longer.
What are age adjusted death rates?
AGE-ADJUSTED DEATH RATE
1. Definition:
AGE-ADJUSTED DEATH RATE is a death rate that controls for the effects of differences in population age distributions. When comparing across geographic areas, some method of age- adjusting is typically used to control for the influence that different population age distributions might have on health event rates.
Direct age-adjustment (or age standardization) is the same as calculating a weighted average. It weights the age-specific rates observed in a population of interest by the proportion of each age group in a standard population (Lilienfeld & Stolley, 1994). www-doh.state.nj.us/...
Nothing wrong with Age Adjusted Death Rates but we need the other factors I have mentioned adjusted too or we just need per capita death rates right now the age adjusted death rates by themselves leave the White Vaccine deniers the impression they are not dying more.

Rural America is less racially and ethnically diverse than the Nation’s urban areas. In 2018, Whites accounted for 78.2 percent of the rural population compared to 57.3 percent of urban areas. While Hispanics were the fastest-growing segment of the rural population, they accounted for only 8.6 percent of rural areas, but 19.8 percent of urban areas. Blacks made up 7.8 percent of the rural and 13.1 percent of the urban population. American Indians were the only minority group with a higher concentration in rural areas (2.1 percent) than urban (0.4 percent). Relatively few Asians and Pacific Islanders (included in the “Other” category) were rural residents, with these groups accounting for 0.9 and 0.05 percent of the rural population, respectively. The rest of the “Other” category reported multiple races and accounted for 2.2 percent of the rural population. www.ers.usda.gov/...
CDC reports that as of July 6, 2022, race/ethnicity was known for 75% of people who had received at least one dose of the vaccine. White people make up a smaller share of people who have received at least one dose (55%) and people who have recently received a vaccination (48%) compared to their share of the total population (59%). Black people make up 10% of people who recently received a vaccination, which is the same as their share of people who have received at least one dose (10%), and smaller than their share of the total population (12%), Hispanic people make up a larger share of vaccinated people (21%) and people who recently received a vaccination (23%) compared to their share of the total population (19%). The overall share of vaccinated people who are Asian is similar to their share of total population (7% and 6%, respectively), www.kff.org/...
We are now ignoring the death rate among the unvaccinated population which is much more Rural, White and Unvaccinated patting ourselves on the back by claiming Age Adjusted Death rates for Whites are not that bad they are lower than African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians.
We need vaccinated vs unvaccinated death numbers by race, state, urban vs rural and income level numbers as well as age factored in if we want a better picture of Covid death trends.
Whites got lucky at first they had less of their total population in urban areas and were less likely to have to work during Covid.
But as of now Asians and Hispanics have a lower death rate Per Capita than Whites because Whites thanks to Fox News and Right Wing Media, Dr Oz are not trusting vaccines. The White Death Rate is very close to the African American Death Rate from Covid despite having much better health insurance than African Americans.
Why? Vaccines African Americans, Asians, Hispanics are now more vaccinated ( sadly I could not find numbers for American Indians).
Tucker Carlson and the racists say You shall not Replace Us! But at the same time they ignore the numbers Vaccines work. These Age Adjusted vaccine numbers just give White Vaccine deniers a Fig Leaf to hide behind.
Do racists subconsciously hate themselves? Are they trying to die? What happens in 6 months when the more vaccinated Minority populations that get their Omicron shots in a week or month and the less vaccinated Whites don’t?
The Covid death rate for Whites will very likely pass the Covid death rate for African Americans.
President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” www.snopes.com/...
What happens when in the near future the Lowest White Man, the Trump voter finds out he is dying more than the Lowest African American, Hispanic, Asian on average? I suspect it will be violent.
Rather than give fools a fig leaf we should tell racists they are being played! Tell them Tucker, Oz, Q are all double agents and want the racists to die! tell them the truth!
Is using the truth to keep people even racists alive unethical? Even if it should reduce greater racial violence later on more than if we do nothing? If Covid mutates again more deadly and Covid so far has kept mutating the Number of Whites dead from Covid per capita should soon exceed the number of African Americans dead from Covid….I then expect violence toward all Minorities.
Remember these deaths are concentrated among Trump voting, Fox News watching people we know are much more likely to be racists.
Or we can be silent and just let them die that might reduce the number of people committing racial violence in the future.
Do we let bad people die who say they want to hurt us by looking the other way?
