And so it has come to this.
There is no time left.
There is now nothing that can agreed, accepted, supported and embraced, voted on, passed by both Senate and House, and ready to take effect before August 2, to avert a technical default and/or liquidity crisis for the U.S. government.
The Republicans, as we always knew they would, have taken their stand, and are daring the President and the Democrats to face them down. They are willing to jeopardize the entire country, the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of Americans, to maintain their extremist ideological and cynical political position.
There is no going back now, nowhere else to turn.
This situation places President Obama and Congressional Democrats in the position where they now have to make a terrible choice:
(1) abandon their core principles and the urgent needs and interests of a majority of poor, working class, middle class, and retired Americans in order to prevent disaster; or
(2) allow economic catastrophe to explode, taking the country back into recession and worse, and fend with the consequences.
I am to the point where I now hope they will swallow hard, close their eyes, pray, and choose Option 2.
