Growing up in a household in the 50's and 60's with parents who were both teachers, we did not have a lot of money to spend on treats. Therefore, New Year's Eve was always special for me and my brother.
My mom had a way of making things special, even on a shoe string. New Year's Eve meant having a few neighbors over to eat her famous clam dip, shredded ham and cream cheese roll ups, summer sausage, Tillamook cheeses, potato chips, black olives, pickles, gingerbread and sugar cookies. There was always Egg Nog made with Tom and Jerry mix for the adults, and Coca Cola for my brother and me. We were not allowed to stay up for the party, but we could help ourselves to the food ahead of time, then take our plates and glasses upstairs to watch TV for awhile and then head to bed. This was a FEAST of snacks we wouldn't see until the next New Year's celebration.
Over the ensuing years, I have used these recipes myself for parties, and have added favorites from friends as well. Carbs be damned for this special night! Let's party, and share our favorite New Year's spreads!
