I'm trying to put all of this together, the Katrina disaster & the other issues currently affecting US policy, and this is what i'm coming up with.
The big picture, end-of-everything issue is: We humans are trying to live here on this planet, and our chances of longterm survival, as a species, are precarious at best. If we really think that the human race has value, and is worth perpetuating, then maybe we should start focusing on that, instead of spending so much energy trying to destroy ourselves.
For example. For at least the foreseeable future, we are not going to be able to control the weather, and we are not going to be stopping any hurricanes. And that's why anyone with any sense is so upset by these recent events. Because although we couldn't stop Hurricane Katrina from landing on an inhabited shore, we did have the technology and ability to (a) figure out that the storm was coming, (b) get the people and their pets out of the way, (c) make preparations to minimize the damage to cities, houses, etc. The fact that our response, as a species, was so inadequate is what makes this so infuriating.
