Politicians sometimes take a stand for a policy. Sometimes they take a stand against a policy. Sometimes they are for a policy before they change their mind and are against it.

With embryonic stem cell research, McCain has found a new path - he's for it at the very same time he is against it. That is, if you can believe his latest ads (and it's not that easy to believe McCain campaign ads).

An interesting nugget from her ABC interview is that she's been on the phone with Saakashvili, and that she committed her full support.

Saakashvili, whose country employs McCain foreign policy advisors as lobbyists.

Why, at the very outset of a much needed educational process, was she on the phone, MAKING PERSONAL COMMITMENTS, with this foreign power? Because she has had a chance to form her own opinion? Because it's right for the country for her to get morally locked into a position now? Or because it fit someone's neocon agenda to tie her down now?

Up until Palin's selection I was on the fence in this election. I don't like extremism. I fear that Obama, a liberal, teamed up with large Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress could lead to more liberal policies than I really want. I think that low capital gains taxes, especially on small businesses, is a good thing; that we might collect more corporation tax if we lower the nominal tax rate and reduce loopholes; that government solutions too often lead to impersonal and inefficient bureaucracies.

In that regard, I could see a conservative Republican in the White House (and McCain is mostly conservative, although he has his moderate moments) disciplined by a Democratic congress could be a workable solution. McCain's extremist tendencies would be checked by Congress, and he would, unlike Bush, probably compromise.

The Palin selection blew that theory out of the water.
