I never follow any kind of animal racing. Part of the reason is that I really don't know anyone who is into it and I didn't grow up watching anything like this. So. I'm not coming from a perspective of experience.
However, I do now a few things. Yesterday, at the Kentucky Derby, Eight Belles was euthanized after she had broken both front ankles. I know that Barbaro died after months of suffering in the hands of the best veterinary care that exists. I know that many greyhounds are killed when their racing careers are over, despite being young dogs. I know that, at least in horse racing, the animals are bred for racing, not for health. They are given drugs and pushed to the limit. Apparently, there are people who love watching the races. Apparently, there are also people with gambling disorders who put a lot of money into the races. Apparently, it's about the money.......big surprise.
Globally, I know that horse racing is not big issue, but as I read the headlines regarding Eight Belles and her death I had to ask myself, why are these sports even necessary? Why do people want to do this? I guess I don't understand. I don't think Eight Belles would have understood either.
