America has lost veterans to suicide before they receive their veteran benefits. Some veterans even die before their claim is processed. No veteran should be lost in such tragic circumstances.

by Kriss Perras | Forty four of the 63 Malibu restaurants garnered the Bay Foundation’s annual Clean Bay Restaurant List for environmental achievement. The number of Malibu restaurants that made the list has increased since 2009, when the City joined the Clean Bay Restaurant Certification Program. The percentage now stands at 70-percent, up from original 64-percent. The City touts how this highlights the community’s strong commitment to protecting the environmental health of Malibu's coastline and mountainous regions. Located in Northwest Los Angeles County, Malibu has 21 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean with a population of only 12,575. It is a small City in an environmentally significant location.

This Memorial Day is the anniversary of Rachel Carson's (1907-1964) birthday.

by Kriss Perras Running Waters - Most known for her influential 1962 work, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson was a marine biologist, writer, and early environmental activist. This book has long been credited with setting into motion a massive environmental movement. The establishment in 1970 of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) too was a consequence of Silent Spring, in addition to its resulting public discourse. Her warnings on the use of pesticides, fertilizers and their ever-widening problem of polluting were in the beginning largely written-off as alarmist. The public and government then eventually took her work seriously. One of these people was the then newly elected President John F. Kennedy who later established a presidential commission to investigate environmental abuse based on Carson's allegations. Is the world today heeding her warnings? Read More

With Derby Day fast approaching June 1, 2013, Bonhams offers an insight into a bustling Derby, almost two hundred years ago.

By Kriss Perras Running Waters | The Derby originated in 1779 as a new race in Epsom and was to be named after either the host of the event, the 12th Earl of Derby, or his important guest, Sir Charles Bunbury. Local legend states that the decision was made by a toss of a coin. The Derby has continued to run at Epsom in the first week of June ever since, except during the World Wars.

The original painting by William Powell Frith (1819-1909), a Royal Academician (R.A.), titled The Derby Day (1858), currently resides in Tate Britain. It was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1858.

"The popularity of the painting was so overwhelming that a rail was erected to hold the eager crowds back, and a policeman was placed on guard," Bonhams, the international auction house placing a valuable copy of the work under the hammer, says

by Kriss Perras Running Waters | It seems the California Public Utilities Commission's (CPUC) Safety and Enforcement Division (SED) and Southern California Edison (SCE) finally found common ground to resolve all matters pertaining to the October 2007 Malibu Canyon Fire, with respect to SCE. A Settlement Agreement has been reached now six years later between the two entities for $37-million. The utility company agreed that of the penalty and remedial payments, $20-million in penalties are to be paid to the State of California General Fund, and $17-million will be spent on pole loading assessments and resulting remediation work in Malibu Canyon and the surrounding areas.

"As part of the settlement, SCE acknowledges its responsibility in a major incident. If the settlement is approved, it will go a long way toward making SCE's system safer and more reliable," said Brigadier General (CA) Jack Hagan, Director of the SED.

The settlement was submitted Monday, May 20, 2013 to an administrative law judge assigned to the investigation of the 2007 Malibu wildfire for review. Assuming approval by the judge, the final step is to present the settlement proposal to the full Commission for approval. Read More

Star Trek: Into Darkness ramped up its global expansion, grossing $40-million across 40 territories this weekend to reach $80.5-million in overseas total, according to boxoffice.com.

by Kriss Perras Running Waters | "The film's global cume stands at $164.5-million with around half of the overseas marketplace still waiting for the film's release," reports the Box Office site.

The filmmakers should expect Oscar noms in several categories: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Production Design, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Costume, Hair & Make-Up, Best Soundtrack and Best Film Editing.

The film is a visual masterpiece. Director J.J. Abrams' (Star Wars VII, Star Trek, Lost, Super 8, Mission Impossible III) vision of mise-en-scene--every person, place or thing in each shot--told a part of the story in the most excellent way: subtle. When Kirk, portrayed by Chris Pine, sits on the shuttle, with Spock, portrayed by Zachary Quinto, leaving an empty chair between them, this symbolizes the formerly best friends from a different timeline are still on a different path than their Prime timeline. Bones, portrayed by Karl Urban, then sits in the row behind them and in the seat behind the empty seat. He examines Kirk, telling him there is something wrong with him. The whole scene portrays the brokenness of the timeline in which they are now forced to live out due to Nero. Abrams is fine-tuning his skills in the Director's chair and is headed into the masters' hall of fame. The science fiction genre has one of those too. His occasional minimalist bent is the only element holding him from such acclaim. Read More

by Kriss Perras Running Waters | Christie's realized in its New York Two-Week Spring Auction Series $828.8-million. The sale showcased important Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary Art, with the inclusion of the 11th Hour Auction, which benefited the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

"My Foundation has worked on environmental issues since 1998, and despite the great efforts by organizations all over the world, our planet is in trouble," said DiCaprio. "The modern world is placing enormous pressure on the very natural systems that sustain us; we are destroying our forests, polluting the air and water, overfishing our oceans and facing overwhelming extinction rates of plants and animals. Can't repeat the past?...Of course you can!

by Kriss Perras Running Waters | If you're old enough to recall, Raiders Of The Lost Ark opened to incredibly poor reviews...and the early critics ate crow after the initial box office results. The Great Gatsby opened to some shaky reviews and is currently leading Star Trek: Into Darkness at the box office in overall gross, which given the tremendous job of those Treky filmmakers, is saying much. It seems some critics of the flash and bling in The Great Gatsby the film forgot the symbolism in the novel of the green light at the end of Daisy's dock across the bay from Gatsby's mansion: money, excess. by Kriss Perras Running Waters Sotheby's London, a high end International auction house, is set to offer from private hands a fabulous Joseph Conrad Collection. Considered a highly comprehensive single author sale, from the library of the late Stanley J. Seeger., a great collector of art, the offer is to include Sylvia Plath’s annotated copy of Lord Jim. This particulat copy was read aloud to her by Ted Hughes the year before her death.

For the uninitiated, when St. Botolph’s Review, a literary magazine, was launched, Hughes was one of the co-producers, he having contributed four poems to the edition. The magazine's launch party also launched the relationship between Hughes and the American poet Sylvia Plath. She is a highly acclaimed author and poet, best known for the novel The Bell Jar, and the poetic masterpiece collectionsThe Colossus and Ariel. Hughes married Plath four months after the magazine's launch party. Many believe Hughes' domineering character led to Plath's depression and subsequent suicide. This belief was further embedded in the popular conscience of the Hughes legacy when his second wife did the same, taking with her the life of their four-year old daughter. Read More

by Kriss Perras Running Waters | Last week was National Drinking Water Week. Say what? Come on, you know you were thinking it. There's a National Drinking Water Week? Even if you didn't know that, understanding there is a human influence on water, a precious resource for human survival, is pretty common. Pollution and its negative effects begs the question of how would, or even more pertinently, is it possible for the human race to survive without clean water?

"Water is the body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60-percent of a person's body weight," says the Mayo Clinic. "Every system in the body depends on water. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues."

Nearly 97-percent of the world’s water is salty or otherwise undrinkable, according to facts from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), another two-percent is locked in ice caps and glaciers. That leaves just one-percent for all of humanity’s needs — all its agricultural, residential, manufacturing, community, and personal needs, cites the EPA. Read More
