Via Huffpo, I picked up this story from today's Daily Telegraph about a guy who has had his face rebuilt over eight years following a bad mouth cancer.
The guy, who lives in the UK, is actually an Australian, but as a UK resident would have been covered by the NHS. In addition to a 21 hour surgery to remove the tumor, he then had radiotherapy, and sixteen subsequent operations to rebuild his face using bone, tissue and skin from different parts of his body.
Tim, a father-of-three, has had to undergo 16 operations to have bones, skin and arteries from all over his body implanted into his face.
The financial advisor had chunks of bone from his rib cage and his hips removed to form the structure of his new nose and jaw to hold in his new teeth.
Arteries from both his legs have been built into his neck and skin from his wrists grafted onto his lower face.
.
And with the NHS, there aren't any co-pays!, so he didn't have to declare bankruptcy. Compare this to the story of the lady with breast cancer who was told to find a charity hospital
