Sue Grafton, author of the Kinsey Milhone detective novels passed way December 29 after a two year battle with cancer. She was 77. Over more than 20 years, Grafton wrote a series of detective novels using alphabetic titles starting with “A is for Alibi” and ending with this year’s publishing of the 25th book in the series, “Y is for Yesterday”. Grafton chose to set all her books in the 1980s with a female detective named Kinsey Milhone in a fictional central coast town of Santa Teresa which most people would recognize as Santa Barbara, her actual home. Fans, including myself, eagerly awaited each book in the series, rejoicing in the publication of the 25th book this year after an interval of more than 2 years. It then became a wait-and-hope game that she would be able to complete the series, something that she had promised to try her best to do. Alas, it is not to be. The series will forever be ended at “Y”.
My sympathies to Grafton’s family and friends and to her devoted readers. She will be missed.
