The growing threat to liberty in this country is not an ephemeral trend; it has deep roots.
The coming crisis, whatever form it takes, will likely shake the worst elements of the criminal right wing out of the system, as did the Civil War, the Depression, the Watergate scandal, et cetera.
But maintaining a free society requires more than keeping the worst enemies of freedom away from the levers of power. It requires a critical mass of citizens who are educated in the values of freedom. That means being educated in why our freedoms are important and what needs to be done to preserve them.
I have been a regular reader of DKos for over 6 months, and this is my first diary. By profession I am a researched and teacher. I am posting now because I would like to see if anyone has a good answer to a question which has puzzled me for a long time:
How do you teach liberty?
Why is it so hard?
Why are people so ignorant about freedom, and how can we penetrate that ignorance?
