It seems Ted Cruz is getting a little annoyed with all of Donald Trump’s attacks on his Canadian birthplace. Cruz let loose on Trump on Tuesday, and it’s not clear which barb was the most vicious, from a Republican primary standpoint. Was it suggesting Trump is tied to Hillary Clinton because of who’s supporting him in questioning Cruz’ eligibility for the presidency?
“It is more than a little strange to see Donald relying on, as authoritative, a liberal, left-wing judicial-activist Harvard law professor who is a huge Hillary supporter,” Mr. Cruz said of Mr. Tribe, who was once his professor at Harvard. “It starts to make you think, ‘Gosh, why are Hillary’s strongest supporters backing Donald Trump?’”
Mr. Cruz went on to say that in recent elections, Democrats had succeeded in getting “the nominee they wanted to run against in the general election.”
“It seems the Hillary folks are very eager to support Donald Trump,” he continued, “and the attacks that are being tossed my direction.”
Or was it, when asked about Trump playing Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. at rallies to highlight Cruz’ Canada problem, saying, “Well, look, he may shift in his new rallies to playing ‘New York, New York’ because you know, Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values”? I mean, New York values! That is a cruel blow in the Republican context. But so is suggesting any kind of connection to Hillary Clinton, so … tough call.
It would seem that Cruz is done biding his time, cuddling up to Trump in hopes of vacuuming up supporters should Trump’s lead collapse. Now that Cruz has a lead of his own in Iowa, it’s gloves off on both sides. Question is, who can do more damage in the next two and a half weeks?
