GOP leaders certainly talk a good game about not wanting Donald Trump to be their party’s standard bearer. They even reserve the right to select the Republican nominee, regardless of the voters’ wishes. From CNBC:
Political parties, not voters, choose their presidential nominees, a Republican convention rules member told CNBC, a day after GOP front-runner Donald Trump rolled up more big primary victories.
"The media has created the perception that the voters choose the nomination. That's the conflict here," Curly Haugland, an unbound GOP delegate from North Dakota, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday. He even questioned why primaries and caucuses are held.
Top conservatives are meeting in Washington tomorrow to discuss the extreme step of a possible third-party run to stop Trump.
And at the very same time, elected Republicans in Congress are introducing legislation to make Trump’s fondest dream a reality.
The euphemistically titled Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act was introduced to the House on Monday by Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).
The legislation, slated for markup on Wednesday, would permit state governors and "chief executives" of "localities" to override the federal government and unilaterally turn away refugees. Last November, in the wake of the Paris attacks, 30 governors across the country vowed to exclude Syrian refugees from settling in their states, even though they did not have the authority to do so.
So, Republican leaders: Tell us one more time exactly what it is that Trump is saying that you disagree with? What is your problem with a Trump nomination other than the fact that he exposes all of the hate and fear you try so hard to disguise with Orwellian-titled legislation like the “Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act?”
