Brussels, Belgium, was rocked by terrorist attacks Tuesday morning. Two explosions hit the city’s airport shortly before 8 AM local time, and another explosion occurred at a subway station in the city about an hour later. Many reports put the death toll at 11 for the airport (revised down from a previously reported 13) and 15 for the subway. However, The Guardian reports at least 34 dead. As is so often the case, we’ll have to wait for more solid information.
According to the White House, President Obama, who is currently in Cuba, has been briefed on the situation. The State Department said that Secretary John Kerry is monitoring the situation and that:
Speaking to NBC, Hillary Clinton said that “We've got to stand in solidarity with our European allies as they have stood with us on so many occasions” and that “It’s unrealistic that we're going to completely shut down our borders, that would stop commerce for example,” while also calling for tightened security. But, in contrast to at least one of the Republican presidential candidates, Clinton was clear that “We don’t need to resort to torture.”
The U.S. embassy in Brussels recommends that Americans in the city stay where they are and avoid public transportation.
