There’s a toilet emergency in Oklahoma and Republican lawmakers are on it. Not the toilet (well, sometimes) but the emergency. Which of course involves transgender students using the bathroom that’s consistent with their gender, per federal guidelines.
None of that, says the Oklahoma GOP, in a legislative snit.
It being immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency is hereby declared to exist, by reason whereof this act shall take effect and be in full force from and after its passage and approval.
It’s not safe out there! Toilet attacks are rampant! And students are obviously lighting up the 911 hotlines!
Seriously, can we please just institutionalize every lawmaker who votes for this thing? Or at least the two Republicans who sponsored it: House Speaker Jeffrey Hickman and Senate President Brian Bingman. The paranoia is striking. The delusion is fantastical. And these people aren’t just making “sausage,” as the ol’ legislative metaphor goes, they’re churning out crap. Which is strangely appropriate, but no less diagnosable.
Did we mention that they want to impeach President Obama over the bathroom directive?
