Donald Trump’s favorite daughter made a big splash at the RNC, and considering the audience, even seemed a bit brave with her pro-working women statements.
“Policies that allow women with children to thrive should not be novelties,” she declared. “They should be the norm.”
The eldest Trump daughter, 34, has built her personal brand around this cause, penning a book called“Women Who Work” and leading the family-friendly policy charge on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
That’s nice. Donald Trump may call women fat, pigs, dogs, slobs, and “disgusting animals,” but at least Ivanka is looking out for their interests when poppa is drafting up those platform planks. Except that, while Ivanka talks a good game, in practice, she’s learned a lot from Donald.
… the company that designs her clothing line, including the $157 sheath she wore during her convention speech, does not offer workers a single day of paid maternity leave.
… the company allows just 12 weeks of unpaid leave, the legal minimum for employers with more than 50 workers.
Surely, having been made aware of the situation, Ivanka immediately moved to remedy the problem and spoke out strongly. Or maybe …
Through a spokeswoman, Trump declined to comment for this story.
Ivanka’s own 12-person company, which farms out the design and manufacturing of products to much larger companies, does offer eight weeks of leave to new mothers. As far as Donald Trump’s official policy goes:
There is no reference to a paid family leave policy on his campaign website. When asked for his position during a Fox News Business interview in October, Trump said, “It’s something that’s being discussed, I think we have to keep our country very competitive, so you have to be careful of it.”
Considering the moratorium Trump says he would put on regulations, and his threat to roll back any regulations that he views as “costing jobs” (in other words, anything that cost companies), it seems a good bet that a Trump administration would follow more the practices of Ivanka’s designer than the comments she made on stage.
