Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) has been trying very hard to appear to be a moderate choice for Pennsylvania in a desperate bid to keep his seat. Planned Parenthood Votes has a new ad to set the record straight.
The ad includes a clip from a 2009 interview with Toomey on MSNBC, in which host Chris Matthews asks Toomey, who opposes abortion, if he would put doctors in jail for performing abortions.
"At some point doctors performing abortions I think would be subject to that sort of penalty," Toomey responds.
They are putting $1.1 million into running the ad on television, and another $200,000 in web ads. That's just a tiny portion of what's being spent in the state, where the Kochs are propping up Toomey with two separate entities—Americans for Prosperity in the ground game and Freedom Partners Action Fund, which has $2 million sunk into a current attack ad against Democrat Katie McGinty. It charges her of "enriching herself at the public's expense."
Here's the big difference in these attacks: the candidate's own words. "I would support legislation in Pennsylvania," he says, "that would ban abortion. And I would suggest that we have penalties for doctors who perform them." That, he tells Chris Matthews, could include jail. That's not moderate.
Please send $3 to Katie McGinty to send Pat Toomey packing.
