Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is apparently trying to fulfill some double-dog-dare to be the most craven and shameless senator in his class. Because this is what he actually wrote for Politico, which is always going to be willing to give him space to spew: “Give Neil Gorsuch an Up-Or-Down Vote.” Oh, and don't miss the subhead: "Democrats are threatening to hold up a qualified Supreme Court nominee for one reason: to hurt Donald Trump."
Oh, really?
There's lots and lots of stuff about how wonderful Neil Gorsuch is and how he sailed through his confirmation to a lower court seat and how Democrats even said nice things about him. And this. This:
Look, we all get it. Democrats are having a tough time coming to grips with the election results. They wish it had turned out differently. I understand their disappointment. I know their base is rioting against reality. I know the far left is demanding obstructionist tactics at any cost. I realize that Leader Schumer in particular is under immense pressure from the radical fringes of our politics. But he and his party can’t allow themselves to be led around by the far left.
That had to be the result of some kind of dare, right? McConnell can't possibly think the nation has been struck with amnesia, and doesn't remember the eight-year fight he waged against President Obama because he had the temerity to win both the popular and electoral college vote—twice.
Does he think we'll forget he led an unprincipled and unprecedented boycott of a Supreme Court nominee because his extremist base—and his own hateful heart—made him do it? And does he think that he's being at all persuasive with Democrats by insulting their intelligence? Whatever it is, it's not going to work.
