The chair of the House Intelligence Committee—the same guy who already said he wouldn’t investigate what Donald Trump knew about Michael Flynn’s conversations with the Russian ambassador, and who was more concerned that Flynn’s conversations leaked than that they happened—is getting ragey over the idea that maybe his “investigation” of Russian election interference isn’t cutting it and a select committee might be in order.
“The Democrats can play their politics all they want; they’re welcome to do that, this is Washington,” [Rep. Devin Nunes] said. “But as far as I’m concerned, we will continue to investigate the Russian activity like we’ve done for many years.”
When asked about the possibility of a select committee, Nunes added: “There is not going to be one; I can tell you there is absolutely not going to be one. And I am not going to be lectured by people who are speaking out of both sides of their mouths."
Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but when you’ve said you won’t investigate key parts of what needs to be investigated while being outraged that leaks let the public know that there’s a thing that should be investigated to begin with, maybe you shouldn’t be using “we will continue to investigate … like we’ve done for many years” as the reason someone else shouldn’t step in to try to get to the bottom of things.
Nunes’ rage says this is a sore spot for him, and the repeated accusations that Democrats are just “playing politics” sound like the kind of projection that’s a result of protecting a corrupt president because he happens to be from your own party. There’s only one thing to do when you see a Republican sore spot: keep pressing on it.
