When it comes to Donald Trump and all things Russia, most Americans smell a rat according to two polls released Tuesday and Wednesday. Not only do they believe Trump fired former FBI director James Comey to save his own hide (vs. for the betterment of the country), a solid majority also think Trump has engaged in activity with Russia that was either illegal or unethical.
Here’s a visual from the first, a Washington Post/ABC News poll, in which 61 percent of respondents suspect Trump’s firing of Comey was a CYA effort.
The second poll, from Quinnipiac, reveals that most voters deeply distrust Trump’s interactions vis-à-vis Russia, with 60 percent saying he himself engaged in something either “illegal” or “unethical,” and another 65 percent saying his campaign did.
President Donald Trump did something illegal in his relationship with Russia, 31 percent of American voters say, while another 29 percent say he did something unethical, but not illegal, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. The president did nothing wrong, 32 percent of voters say. [...]
A total of 68 percent of voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about Trump's relationship with Russia.
That concern is why the survey also showed that Americans broadly support the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate the Trump-Russia matter, by 73 – 15 percent.
That’s the baseline from which Trump starts today as James Comey provides lawmakers with further details about his unease with the interactions he and Trump had concerning the FBI’s Russia investigation.
