The strange tale of Whitefish Energy, a two-person Montana company awarded a $300 million contract to help rebuild Puerto Rico's power grid—a contract that specifically prohibits government agencies from later auditing just how much the company is really spending or pocketing, in those efforts—takes another turn.
Puerto Rico's governor is calling for a controversial contract with Whitefish Energy Holdings to be terminated immediately.
Gov. Ricardo Rossello on Sunday asked the Governing Board of the Electric Power Authority to cancel the contract, according to the governor’s official Twitter account.
Rossello is also calling for an investigation into just how the contract was awarded and had previously asked the Department of Homeland Security audit that very question; the more usual arrangement after a natural disaster is for utility companies to request (and get) mutual aid from states not affected. Whitefish appears well-connected to top Republicans, but had no past experience that would suggest them as an obvious fit for a contract as extensive as the one they were granted.
