While Alabama Republican Senate candidate and sexual predator who targeted children Roy Moore screeches about supposed "Christian values,” we're learning more about the conservative "Christian" religious figures down in Alabama who are still backing him.
Surprise: At least one of them, Bill Atkinson, was himself convicted for attempting to cover up for a serial pedophile.
A music minister at the Alabama church where embattled Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore spoke on Wednesday was once found guilty of trying to obstruct an investigation into claims that his son sexually molested children, AL.com first reported.
The minister’s youngest son, Jonathan, had set up a video recording device in secret after receiving complaints from some of the children, according to a court ruling. Jonathan later showed his father a tape of Will sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy. At the request of the eldest Atkinson, Jonathan’s brothers destroyed the tape by erasing it and shooting at it.
To reiterate, Atkinson's son was caught on tape sexually assaulting an orphan under his care. Bill Atkinson's response was to order the the tape destroyed. For this, Atkinson received a two-month sentence and was fined $25,000. He went on to support Roy Moore, child molester, because of course he did.
At this point, it seems like it would not be out of bounds to consider the whole of "Christian conservatism" to be not much more then a sex cult. It is more, of course; it is also a Talibanesque movement to disassemble our Constitution and replace it with God's Law, where God's Law is what a small set of perverted child molesters declare it to be and where any of us who object to that finally gets what coming to us. To this end, a little coordination with Russian espionage efforts here or a little sexual assault there is nothing. Just erase the evidence, and move on.
Roy Moore believes that he and his close allies represent Christian values, at least when it comes to the Alabama interpretation of values. He is counting on Alabama voters to feel the same way. He may be wrong, or he may not be; at the moment the polling suggests it is a coin toss.
But if you're presuming that those that still support Roy Moore are doing so because they don't find child molestation a deal-breaker for a would-be senator, here is a bit of evidence for that.
