Republicans continued on their program to eradicate its last shreds of human decency from their party overnight as Trump, the RNC, and Republicans everywhere folded their loving arms around Roy Moore. Trump gave Moore his full endorsement, as the RNC gave him their full pockets.
President Trump on Monday strongly endorsed Roy S. Moore, the Republican nominee for a United States Senate seat here, prompting the Republican National Committee to restore its support for a candidate accused of sexual misconduct against teenage girls.
A few Republicans, like Mitch McConnell, simply tucked their heads into their muck-covered shells and backed away from earlier hints of propriety. Others were more explicit in their embrace of 30-something men in power finding their dates in the juniors department at Sears.
“I don’t think he had any choice but to do that,” Hatch told reporters traveling with the president to Utah on Monday who asked him about Trump’s endorsement of Moore. “You know he needs every Republican he can get so he can put his agenda through. So that’s the only Republican you can possibly get down there.”
Well then. Republicans have weighed up accusations of sexual assault, harassment, and intimidation and determined that a vote in the Senate is worth any action against women.
Only a week ago, James O’Keefe and his attempt to “sting” the Washington Post with a fake Moore victim was a GOP embarrassment, Paul Ryan was speaking against Moore, and even Mitch McConnell was on record admitting that he believed Moore’s accusers. But that was before the Republicans realized that the last fragments of belief in justice, in human rights, in simply doing right … were getting in the way.
The Ghost of Republicans Past did speak up in an effort to save the party before it’s too late.
… even as senior Republicans again coalesced around Mr. Moore, there were reminders that the party’s internal divide over its nominee remained. Mitt Romney, the party’s presidential nominee in 2012, warned that Mr. Moore’s presence in Congress would be “a stain” on Republicans and the country.
“No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity,” Mr. Romney wrote on Twitter.
To which today’s Republican leadership replied … who?
Asked about allegations by several women that Moore pursued sexual relationships with them while they were children, Hatch said that “many of the things he allegedly did are decades ago. So it’s hard to -- that’s a decision that has to be made by the people in that state."
Sure. That makes sense. Because the statute of limitation on Republicans giving a damn about women’s rights, sexual abuse, and … anything at all except holding onto power, has definitely expired.
There is still a candidate in the Alabama Senate race who’s not just decent, but genuinely good. Help Doug Jones get out his message in the week that remains before the election.
