This week the Utah State Legislature passed a bill to require pregnant women seeking an abortion to watch an anti-abortion video offering “other choices.” I tweeted about it, and my tweet is going viral over on the Other 98% Facebook page and on Twitter.
People are outraged at the insensitivity of our GOP lawmakers who never fail to see the disconnect between their rabid protections of the 1st and 2nd Amendments and their utter disregard for Roe v. Wade. The most common response to my tweet is to ask an obvious question:
Why shouldn’t a gun purchaser have to watch a video of victims of gunshot wounds, mass shootings in progress, or autopsies of shooting victims?
Roe v. Wade is the law of the land, but only the 2nd Amendment has a sacred status in the minds of the NRA and its adherents. It’s time we took women’s rights as seriously as we take the right to own a lethal weapon.
The fact that this law passed and is on its way to our governor truly highlights what gerrymandering has done to our state. Both houses of the legislature have a super-majority. With only 5 democrats out of 29 total in our State Senate, it has been virtually impossible to stop this type of “message” bill from advancing. Looking at the demographics of Utah, we should rightfully have several more seats in both houses. We won’t be the majority party anytime soon, but at least our voices wouldn’t be muted completely if we had proportional representation!
I’m running for State Senate District 8 to change that.
Please help women keep Republicans out of their vaginas here in Utah and across the land!
