With Donald Trump escalating his attacks against Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Republican senators are being asked why they refuse to support legislation that would prevent Trump from firing him. Most peddle laughable comments about being sure that the powder keg in the Oval Office would never do anything that stupid, but soon-to-be-ex Sen. Bob Corker finally admitted what we’ve known all along: for Republicans, it’s Party over country, flagged here by Greg Sargent:
“The president is, as you know—you’ve seen his numbers among the Republican base—it’s very strong. It’s more than strong, it’s tribal in nature,” said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn ...
“People who tell me, who are out on trail, say, look, people don’t ask about issues anymore. They don’t care about issues. They want to know if you’re with Trump or not,” Corker added.
And there you have it. Donald Trump could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and Republicans would furrow their brows, be concerned … and then get back to job number one: protecting their own ass. Screw the country.
