Donald Trump’s business—which he has refused to disentangle himself from—leases space to a state-owned Chinese bank. The Trump Organization is part two international developments being built in part by construction firms backed by the Chinese government. Items in Ivanka Trump’s clothing line are manufactured in China. And while Trump’s tariffs on China just went into effect, the Washington Post reports that:
The tariffs that were set to kick in at 12:01 a.m. Friday are not expected to affect the Trumps’ financial interests, but the family’s business presence in China is awkward as the two countries ratchet up their protectionism.
Awkward? Donald Trump doesn’t think anything is awkward if it’s making him money. Let’s think about alternate endings to that sentence, though. Like “The tariffs that were set to kick in at 12:01 AM Friday are not expected to affect the Trumps’ financial interests, and isn’t that interesting?” Or “The tariffs that were set to kick in at 12:01 AM Friday are not expected to affect the Trumps’ financial interests, because of course not.”
