The voters most critical to the Democratic effort to retake control of the House show strong double-digit support for providing a check this fall on the raging lawlessness of Donald Trump, according to a new Washington Post/ABC poll. The Post’s Greg Sargent writes:
The new Post-ABC poll suggests that the anti-Trump backlash we’ve seen throughout this cycle among suburban, college-educated and independent voters is running strong: According to the cross-tabs, college-educated whites want a Democratic-led Congress as a check on Trump by 62-34, and suburban voters want the same by 58-37. Independents want a check by 63-27.
That's a 20- to nearly-30-point differential in support of reining in Trump among the core voting base that will determine the outcome of some 20 toss-up districts central to Democrats flipping control of the House. Voters overall said they wanted a Democratically-controlled Congress to provide a check on Trump by 60 to 34 percent.
That widespread support for putting a check on Trump is contributing to a generic ballot that is trending more and more Democratic. The Post/ABC poll found voters preferred Democrats in a generic matchup by a 14-point margin (52-38 percent). That's up 4 points from the same time in April, an increase that maps with the overall trend in the generic ballot, according to FiveThirtyEight.com. Check out the chart below.
