Could the terrible political environment and Donald Trump’s sinking approval rating put the Senate in reach for Democrats? While the entire House is up for grabs this year, the Senate has looked out of reach for Democrats because, with only a third of Senate seats on the ballot in 2018, multiple vulnerable Democratic incumbents and few vulnerable Republican incumbents are up for re-election this year.
But it’s starting to look like Democrats might have a path to the majority, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell telling reporters that “I hope when the smoke clears, we’ll still have a majority” and a Republican “leading strategist” describing the situation as a “shipwreck.” Rep. Beto O’Rourke is putting on a stronger-than-expected run against Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas. Former Gov. Phil Bredesen is putting on a stronger-than-expected run for the Tennessee seat being vacated by Sen. Bob Corker. Democratic Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia are looking stronger than expected.
Democrats still have to run the table, but if Republicans are using the word shipwreck, that means Democrats are riding high on hope. And as we see every time Donald Trump nominates anyone to any position—but especially all those judges—the Senate is key to stopping Trump from destroying the country for a generation.
Let's do this. Can you help win Nevada and Texas by giving $3 each to Jacky Rosen and Beto O'Rourke?
