Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were not each other’s biggest fans in the early days, but they’ve learned to love each other. It turns out that what matters most to both is their shared dedication to the pursuit of power with no regard for ethics, morality, or the good of the nation. They may have wildly different styles, but they’re both after the same thing, and they’ve come to appreciate that about each other.
"There’s been no less drama, but it’s been an extraordinarily successful Congress," McConnell said. "I think we understand each other better than we did last year. And it’s not an exaggeration to say that we talk all the time."
For his part, Trump has realized that McConnell’s buttoned-down exterior hides a true warrior for evil:
"He stared down the angry left-wing mob," Trump said. "He never blinked, and he never looked back, and he got us a man who will be one of our great, great Supreme Court justices." Trump later called McConnell "the greatest leader, in my opinion, in history. What we’ve done is incredible together."
Their personal brands may be different, their styles may be different, but Trump and McConnell have learned that they can get what they want from each other. And that’s about as close to a genuine relationship as either of them is capable of.
