Ron DeSantis, working hard to keep his title as king of the dog whistle, couldn’t pass up an opportunity to blow that whistle about George Soros just days after Soros was sent a mail bomb. Speaking about the dangers of an Andrew Gillum victory for Florida governor:
“He could be seeding, into our state government, you know, Soros-backed activists,” DeSantis said of his opponent.
Hours after DeSantis said that, a Trump mega-fan from DeSantis’ state of Florida was arrested for sending bombs to Soros and other prominent Democrats and Trump critics.
But even without the context of the bombs, we have to be clear that DeSantis was pushing anti-Semitism here. “Soros” is Republican code for “rich Jewish progressive donor.” That’s what’s going on with the obsessive Republican focus on Soros. We know they’re not against billionaires spending a lot of money on politics, since that’s one-third of the Republican plan for victory (the other thirds being bigotry and voter suppression), but something about Soros is … special to Republicans. Enough so that the power of using his name as a threatening, insidious force outweighs the decorum of not demonizing people who’ve recently been targeted with bombs.
