Donald Trump has been threatening to declare a national emergency for a while now in his pursuit of border wall funding. It’s been long enough, in fact, for pollsters to find out what the public thinks about Trump’s plan, which he made official Friday morning. So we know that, like so many other Trump plans, declaring a national emergency to build a wall is very, very unpopular.
FiveThirtyEight put together the polls:
That right there is a high of 34 percent approval for the idea, and a low of 64 percent disapproval. Approval or support ranges from 31 percent to 34 percent, and disapproval or opposition ranges from 64 percent to 66 percent—so polling has been remarkably consistent, and people really don’t want Trump to do the thing he just did. Not that that has ever stopped him.
